4.0 Exhaust Clip Thread !

well the only reason I asked is 1 there are 4 cats on my truck therfore removing the back 2 technically isn't illegal there would still be a cat system for both sides of the exhaust per inspection manual. and before you say it came from factory with 4 it needs 4 you are wrong. Pa Inspection manual clearly states there must be a cat system in place not that it has to be as Ford made it.. I don't want a fight either

Af boy has removed his I like how it sounds and I think it would make the truck sound much better thats why I asked if it would trip my oxygen sensor. If you don't wish to help very well but please don't tell me I'm doing something illegal when I am not.

First off, my truck only came with 2 cats. (99 SOHC V6). If your truck has 4, Im assuming you have the v8. With that said, if you remove 2 out of the 4, there are various reports on this forum that you will pass inspection. If you wish to take this route, you will trip o2s. To bypass these, go to o2simulator.com and get the universal one for 2 cats. Install this and you will be golden.

BTW, Technically, altering the cat convertor setup that came from the factory is illegal unless it is faulty....

no I have the ohv 6 and i'm not gonna disagree with you.. per vehicle code yes, per inspection guidelines as long as the components are there then....? i thought ur ohc had 4 as well so I am sorry. i have the two up front and the two back near the muffler. thats why I asked because yours sounds so nice. you feel doing this will make the bank 2 sensors trip though?

random out of nowhere question, i went to two exhaust shops today to get estimates on my exhaust setup (dual in/dual out) for my '00 Ex Sport 4.0 SOHC, and both places said they can't put dual tailpipes on my Ex.
i know some of you guys have duals on your trucks, so do i need to find some different exhaust shops or is there any secret to making dual tailpipes fit on my truck?

(i have had duals on my truck before, but the welding was bad, and the pipework was not that great, so i removed the catback system a couple of years later and temporarily replaced it with some glasspacks. i dont wanna go back to the same shop because i refuse to give them any more business)

On our motors, I would highly suggest you keep a single 2.5" tail pipe. Your low end torque will thank you ;)

But Ive had true duals ran with the spare in. I ditched it due to low end power lost.

so i have a flomaster 44 with turndowns, and i totally agree with the 3k+ rpms it sounds ricey statement. What muffler should i get that sounds really throaty throughout the rpm band? I read through a few pages, im not digging cherrybomb or borla stingers.

the guy at one of the muffler shops recommended single tailpipe, he also said flowmaster super 40 was a little too big to be reasonable, (i was considering the flowmaster super 40 because i have seen several videos of explorers with it and i like how it sounds) HOWEVER the man i talked to also recommended a DELTA 40 for my use instead of the SUPER 40. any comments or opinions on that?

I got single in and dual out 40 series flows for my 01 sport but i dunno what model 40 series flowmasters i got. But i might get rid of them and put super 44 series and get true dual exhaust as well.

what does he mean too big to be reasonable??

I personally like the super 40; however, its going to be loud (I run offroad pipes). The delta 40 is quieter to the super 40. I like hearing my exhaust so I went with the super. I love it personally

I ran the super 44 and personally hated it. Too dirty sounding and doesnt have that smooth flowmaster sound. With that sound, flowmasters are infamous for getting raspy above 3k. With no cats, mine gets raspy above 4k. Its our lovely V6 motors

Ive been wanting to check into spintech mufflers. Any opinions on those on v6's?

i really dont know what he meant, i think he was just commenting on the muffler case itself being large, considering it would be going on a 6 cylinder...

but i did make a comment saying i didnt want something that would drone too much so maybe he was referring to that? i know the Delta is supposed to be really quiet on the interior but it's also more mellow than the super 40 on the exterior, and i like throaty sound the super 40 offers.....

as of now, my tentative plans for exhaust are Flowmaster Super 40 with single 2.5" tailpipe

any comments/ideas anyone wants to share in regards to the Delta/Super 40 issue?

no personal experience here.... hit youtube and watch a few videos, there's a few videos of spintechs on V6's, they have a unique sound to them, but not really something i'm looking for... they're pretty smooth sounding and not very deep or throaty sounding, so they kinda make the V6 sound like a 4 cylinder IMO

here's some videos of a V6 mustang with a spintech, flowmasters sound SO much deeper

if you notice on flowmasters website http://www.flowmastermufflers.com, the super 44 is highest on their scale rating Interior and Exterior noise, so naturally, i would imagine it would sound quite "dirty"

i'm considering the Super 40, because of the sound i've heard on some youtube videos, and because i listened to the sound clips on Flowmaster's "Muffler" page (even though i know Flowmaster did their recordings with V8 motors, it still gives a good reference to the acoustic characteristics of each muffler). the Super 40 is ranked 3rd (with the delta 40 ranked 4th) on Flowmaster's scale of Interior and Exterior noise

get the cherry bomb pro/vortex and remove stock resonator, then put resinator tip at end, it will be the deepest sounding you can get

The cherry bomb pro and vortex and two completely different mufflers. The Pro is an imitation of the flowmaster 40 original muffler and the vortex is a flow thru/fiberglass type muffler. Two totally different mufflers.

Aklm- Ive ran the Flowmaster 50 SUV, Flowmaster original 40, super 40,super 44, Cherry Bomb Extreme, Thrush Turbo and Hooker Max Flo and I believe the Super 40 kills them all. I simply love this muffler. It does get loud so if you want that deep sound but little drone I would try the flowmaster delta 40.

As far as you commenting on my dirty comment. The flowmaster original 40 is by far the loudest they made in 2 chambers. This muffler was LOUD, louder than the super 44- but still had that infamous flowmaster smooth tone. The super 44 just sounded sloppy. If you look at their interior designs, the super 44 looks a lot different then the other 40 series mufflers.

thanks Afboy, that's one of the biggest reasons i love explorerforum is cuz we can all share information based on personal experience.
one more question about the Super 40... in your experience, how bad is the interior drone on this muffler? i know the Delta 40 is known for greatly reducing interior resonance, but if the Super 40 isnt unbearable, i'll be fine.
can you gimme a 1 to 10 rating on interior drone with the Super 40...
1 = stock
10 = ears bleeding

Keep in mind I do not have cats and run 2.5" piping from the manifolds back

I would say that the drone is a 5 on the scale when cruising thru the city at around 50 mph. The muffler is the loudest on a dead stop acceleration but tones down a bit when cruising

well that doesnt sound too bad for me since i'm running stock dual cats and plan on running a single 2.5 inch tailpipe... if it gets annoying i'll just put some acoustic deadening material under the carpet.... thanks for all the input!

So many pages on this thread. I went through a lot of the pages and I am very undecided what I should get. I have a 95 XLT 4.0 OHV and I want to get an exhaust. I don't care if it's loud, but not like straight pipe loud I guess.
I am leaning towards the Flow Master 40 series (http://flowmasterdirect.com/product.php?productid=41765&cat=0&page=2). I am also willing to purchase a cat back system there too if I can have some feedback on which would give me a good sound.

I ran the flowmaster 40, and can honestly say that the Cherry bomb Pro sounded much better on the OHV.
