'95 Explorer EB
I know that this subject has been brought up several times before but it seems that most of the them wanted to put the SOHC in a pre- '95. I have a '96 Explorer EB. I bought it on ebay about 3 weeks ago for $300. It had a bad head gasket, trany was out, and after all that happened the guy used it as a parts car to fix another X. So it also needed a passengers side door, fender and front suspention. So far I have gotten the susp. from a salvage yard and put that on and have rebuilt the trans(the only thing that was really wrong with it was a broken flex plate, but since i had it out i figured i might as well rebuild it). It has 123,000 miles on it. The resone why it needed a head gasket is because the waterpump went out on it and it overheated. I don't have the motor torn apart yet(I'll do that today), but I have been thinking about swaping in the 4.0 SOHC. From what i saw from one of Doug904's post it isnt all that hard of a swap. I just want to get as much info as possible before i decide what i want to do.
Thanks

slow down.
The 96 you bought has the ohv 4.0L V6 in it correct?
And you already rebuilt the auto trans that was attached to the OHV but have not fixed the engines head gasket.

You want to keep the rebuilt trans and run a 96-97 SOHC 4.0L V6 correct?

Is the truck 2wd or 4x4?

Yes it is an OHV 4X4. I have considered swapping in a SOHC. I thought they started puting the SOHC in in '97 but i could be wrong. What i need to know is will the transmition work with the SOHC. I saw in one of dougs posts that he swaped in an SOHC and kept the tran from the OHV and the only difference was the upper passenger side bellhousing bolt. Also would i need wiring harness and computer? I am just look for all the info i can get before i decide what to.

Dougs truck is a 5 speed.
I am not sure if the SOHC computer for an auto will control your auto or not.
This could get tricky.

97 was the first year of the SOHC in the 4 door explorer.
You might be better off just skipping the whole idea and go 5.0L if you want more power.
Bauuman engineering MIGHT make a stand alone controller that will control your current transmission.

The transmission SHOULD bolt up to the SOHC, 4.0L, yes.
The computer will likely not control it.

The OHV 4.0L is a great engine, if you are looking for more power you should consider the V8 IMO, the SOHC is going to get tricky fast with a automatic, I believe (have not done this, dont know alot about the 96 automatic in your truck)

yeah the 95-96s were the 4r55e's and the 97 and later ohv and sohcs all had the 5r55e. Considering the addition of a 5th gear I can almost say for sure they will not work with each other unless you get a comp just for the trans which by that time would be easier to just get a later model tranny.
