Getting a 4.6 motor out of a 98 mustang from a friend today. What do a need to do to put it in my 2002 sport trac. The motor is free, so I can't say no.

Trade it for a 5.0L !
Not trying to be a smart azz and I love the 4.6L's but they are wider than a 428 and I cannot see trying to fit that into a Gen 1 Sport Trac.

I have a 92 5.0 sitting iny yard that I could pull the motor out of, but I would really like to get it back on the streets soon. I'm wanting to convert the 4.6 to DOHC and get some real power outta my ST

Take a looky!

I'm gonna measure and make sure everything will fit, but I'm just wondering if there is anyone out there that has done this already. I mean there gotta be a way. My 04 cobra had like an inch of clearance on the sides but they got that DOHC in there. It was tight, but mean as hell. A SOHC seems more logical for my ST though

No, they BUILT the Mustang for the 4.6L, I had a '99 . I wanted a 4.6L SOHC in my 68 Ranchero but would have had to cut the shock towers so I went 5.0L HO. The 68-69's came with 428's.........

Go for it!:thumbsup::D

How does the 5.0 do in your ST?

Okay so I'm thinking about just pulling the motor out of my 5.0 now.
The mustang need a lot of body work anyways. Maybe I'll just put the 4.6 in it. Would the trans need swapped as well. I have a lot of work ahead of me..

Yep Steve's right, if you have a 5.0 go that route instead. You could possibly put the 4.6 modular engine in there but you'd have to remove the inner fenders, everything under the hood and fabricate everything.

the 2nd gen explorer 5.0 is near direct swap a lil electrical repinning and some work with the vss. problem is if your trac is 4wd you'll loose it and end up with awd or 2wd. also you go from 5spd auto or manual to a 4spd auto. now you can run different transmission and different transfer cases but then you dont have a "plug 'n play" setup

Yea mine is a 02 4x4 ST. I just think with me adding a lift and bigger tires the 4.0 will have trouble were as a 5.0 could get the job done.

well im rolling on 32" tires and the stock 3.73 LSD and its plenty powerful to take on trails. if i re-geared to a lower gear such as 4.56 or so i would be right back to stock speed and torque.

Yea but how would it do on the highway?

i cant hit 75mph by the end of your average on ramp in a shorty like a city on ramp from dead stop to merge i get up to 50-60mph

Yea I don't think I could handle that, I average about 70-75 on the highway.

I typically run 70-75 with 35s, 4.10 gears and the stock 4.0. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have more power and get-up and go. I think that regearing will help a lot with that. I know a guy on here that runs 36s with 4.88s and he drives fast too. I don't like to put my foot to the floor too often but it can still move when I do.

More power is always better. I think I've finally decided on going with a 3" body lift. Plus I'm getting 33-13.5-15's when I get the cash. If you've seen GSE Brent's ST that's the same set up I'm going for. I want to take the 5.0 out of my mustang but I still want my 4x4

Went to the Carlisle truck show with him actually lol. His truck looks even better in person and the 13.50 width looks mean. You'd have to go with an older tranny and a t-case from I think the 90's F150. Ive read about a couple people doing it because awd just isnt as good as 4x4 offroad. If you do a little bit of digging on this site you'll at least figure out what major parts you'd need to keep 4x4.
