This may be a dumb question but I was wondering. Aside from the engine itself, what else has to be changed to put a 2005 4.6 into a 2005 explorer with a 4.0? Is the trans the same? Or is the whole thing more trouble than its worth?

In my opinion it would be much easier to just trade/buy a 4.6 equipped explorer. It would save you a lot of time, money, and aggrivation.

Someone may correct me but I believe the transmissions are the same.

The motor mounts should be the same.
I guess at a minimum you'll need
motor
computer
exhaust
maybe the radiator

Plus I believe from 04 up the throttle is "drive by wire" so that may be different too on a 4.0 vs 4.6

I agree with Matthew77, save yourself the aggravation, trade yours on a 4.6. You'll know its factory then and your resale value will remain.

yea all explorers have the same crappy tranny curtis... i like having 5 speeds but i hate the ratios haha... i guess its made more for torque since u can pull with it...

it mite be more trouble than its worth although it would most likely fit rite in the engine bay since its made for it

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't sure if I was posting in the right spot.

the 4.6 has 3.73 gears in the rear end where as the 4.0 has 3.55s i believe

its either 3.55 or 3.23... i think ive looked it up before but i could be wrong... ill look into it

Thinking of swapping a 4.6l from a 99 mercury grand marquis into a 2003 Ford explorer Eddie Bauer edition 4.0l. Any thoughts
