4.0L OHV vs. 5.0L

Yes, a 4R70W is much better. It is basically a wide-ratio AODE (AODE-W), which is an electronic AOD, which is derived from a C-4. There are plenty of aftermarket parts for this transmission due to all the Mustang and F-series trucks with them. If I remember correctly, Roush Mustangs with an automatic have a stock, unmodified 4R70W. Their shift points and firmness are changed due to computer programming.

(For those of you who are more familiar with the light duty transmission, help me on this one.) On the other hand, your 5R55E is an extra gear added to a 4R55E, which is a either a derivative of or the A4LD. Either way, it's light-duty, and I don't recommend it for lots of heavy towing.

do yall know if a lightning uses the same 4R70W as ours and the F-150s? I'm curious.. cos they dont seem ot have problems.

Certainly the 4R70w is geared nice for most situations... but I find the computer that controls it to be ridiculously stupid. It always finds the worst place to shift into overdrive, like at the base of a hill, or right when I let off the gas and then put back on (like to reposition my foot or something). It will shift into OD when I'm moving 40 up a slight incline.... so what does it have to do? immediatley shift out of overdrive. Theres also a problem with the lockup system locking and un-locking in this tranny, its the only one I've ever seen do this.

I'm not trying to be an instigator lol, I'm just sayin, the 4R70W is not all smiles and lolipops. Infact the transmission specialist at the dealership refered to it as a "poorly designed picky transmission" or something along those lines, I've just about forgot what that guy said..

i assume this was the same dealership that told you there was nothing wrong with your X, right?

hurm I was looking and my truck has the EFI OHV engine and the 5r55e, this one company says that only the SOHC is supposed to have it.

DarkFox1, the F-150 Lightning might have a 4R100 due to the extra power. I know that some F-150s, such as a V6 single cab SWB 4x2 do have a 4R70W. I imagine that the 4x4's have been upgraded to the 4R100, though.

I know what you mean about the tree-hugging computer's control of the transmission. As soon as I get a job, I plan to get an exhaust system and get either a Diablo Delta chip or a Baumanator to control my transmission. I'm also thinking about the OD control that I saw on Ford-Trucks.com.

97 and later OHV's also have the 5R55E.

james, you guessed it :P

Perhaps I should consider a chip, they're not that expensive.. I just hate to pay $50 2 times a week for gas. Dont' those things make yer mileage worse?

I mean, the computer contorls the transmissionb right? so each engine/tranny has an individual computer?

As Jason said, all automatic equipped V6 Explorers, Rangers and Aerostars got the 5R55E begining in '97. Ford dropped the 4R55E after the '96 model year.

darkfox, you do not need to buy a chip. you do not need to buy ANYTHING for your truck until you get it fixed. save every dime you can, and when you have enough to have it checked out by someone REPUTABLE, then do so. ever heard that saying "you cant polish a turd"? that is what you will be doing by putting a performance chip in a X that is not running right to begin with... IMHO

hehe, well, I thought about that after I mentioned it. But I keep thinking.. what if I'm wrong... what if I'm just impatient.

This morning was GREAT, it was about 74 out, 7AM, I was on my way to campus, the truck was responsive, the transmission didn't drag, it shifted about where its supposed to, I had no problem keeping up and even passing normal traffic with less than half throttle, and it didn't drag me down and drop speed like crazy when I let off the gas, it was a nice drive. I wish this thing was consistant.

Then after class.. 10AM.. slow as usual.. it was about.. 90? I think? I dont really know if that has anything to do with it. I know when I crank it up when its hot theres a LOT of noise form under the hood, like a wooshing kinda thing, I suppose its the fan, it was VERY slow and shifted ridiculously hard on the way home.

man my engine makes a whole lot of noise with the exhaust and everything each time it accelerates :-)
