4.0L SOHC VS. 5.0L V8

I don't get why they had Yamaha build the V8, even though it had a little more power than the V6, it was still slower than an auto V6 Sho and would get it's ass kicked by a V6 Sho with a manual. I've been in a V8 Sho and was not impressed, V8 gas mileage with V6 power. And the guys on the Sho forum are having a crapload of problems with the V8 especially the cam tensioner problem, and b/c the cars are out of warrenty as they stopped production a while ago, it's between 10,000 and 15,000 to replace the V8 Sho engine. And their hasn't been a recall yet which really sucks for them.

I've been in two V6 Sho's and they definitley kick ass, both auto and manual. That V6 sounds incredible. The manual one I was in had flowmasters on - made that V6 sing like crazy, I couldn't believe the rumble it made.

I can only comment about my situation, and what I'm doing.

I'm CURRENTLY (but not at this second ;)) towing my 73 LT Camaro on a UHaul dolly. I left from San Diego to my current location, in Dawsonville, Ga.

I have a 99 XLT 5.0. I put a Hidden Hitch class 3 on it, and used a stock harness (which I found in the jack comp't AFTER I had bought & installed a H.H. wiring harness, for sale when I get back to PA ;))

Anyways, besides being able to tow IN OVERDRIVE[b/] {forget all the towing BS until you're in the same situation), and I STILL get 19 MPG. I have a loaded car (its full of crap) being towed, and my X is packed with me, my family (wife & 2 kids), and our gear in the back. I've made it up some steep ass roads, and the ONLY problem I had (knocking on this wooden desk) was that I was driving on tires that were underinflated for towing, which I corrected, and have NO problems going 70-75 TOWING IN O/D, and have once or twice on smooth & windless roads hit 85. Please don't try that, it was a complete accident going that fast.

I can't say good or bad about the 4.0, but I have mad props to the 5.0 X I have.

Of course, your mileage may vary ;)

Just wondering - have your exhaust manifolds cracked yet. My passenger side exhaust manifold developed a hairline crack last year- Apparantly it's almost guaranteed on 5.0 V8 Explorers. Mines a '96 XLT with 160,000 km (100,000 miles).

On another Hand...... The 5.0 comes with a 4R70W. (wide ratio transmission) The 4R70W is used behind Ford's GT-40 concept cars, Mustangs, Expeditions, F-150's, etc, etc.

Ford made a lot of changes to the 4R70W in 1998 that improved the weakpoints too.

It's a lot better than the Ford pinto based transmission you find on SOHC/OHV V-6's.

I have owned both!!! My 5.0L V got better gas mileage too!!!! My 5.0 is DIE HARD. I have put that engine in a lot of tough situations.

Good Luck,
Al

Could you get away with saying that the 4L OHV is as relaible as a 5.0L?
The 4L may not date back as far as the 5L but it seems to be a workhorse in realtionship to miles you will get out of it with little or no problems.
Many on this board have run both of them to the 1/4 million mile.

Note that the OHC is excluded from the above statement.

Comments?

My 97 SOHC 4wd has 113,000 miles with not problmes after resolution of timing chain guides @ 45,000 miles. With Mobile 1 in the engine since 70k, I have never added oil between any 4.5k change since new. The SOHC suits me just fine, I would of bought the V8, but with the AWD the only option other that 2wd (big mistake), that in its self would be a mistake. The AWD V8 gets lousy MPG and drives like a tank. I test drove one and hated it. Something about driving all the wheels all the time makes no sense at all. Its almost the equivalent of driving around with your emergency brake on. If the V8 (1997) came with the control tract system or equivalent, now thats a different story.

I've got a 92 EX, 5-speed with 3.27 gears. I just towed my 21 foot travel trailer (3800lbs loaded) about 200 miles. It was better than I expected. Fifth gear and 100 kph (60 mph) was easy and for the steeper hills I backed off to fourth. I never slowed below 80 kph and the gas miliage was not to bad. I also didn't have any over heating problems as the truck runs cool anyway. The only mod that I have done for trailer towing is a extra leaf on each side and a load dist. hitch. I'm happy.

Sailorman3 :)

good friend has a 97 sohc with 190,000. No problems with engine, just change oil and a few tune ups.

Also, In 05' or 06' is the mustang getting the 4.0? I might be wrong but I thought I read this somewhere.

The '05 Mustang V6 is getting the SOHC, as well as the '05 Land Rover Discovery.

i love my 5.0!! i have never had a problem with it!! i think's it got to be one of the most reliable motor's ford ever made. don't get me started on how much faster the stock 5.0 is over the stock sohc.i drove my dad's soch sport trac 4x4 and that thing was a dog compared to the 5.0.....and if a 5.0 and a soch both have say intake, chip, exhaust the 5.0 with have bigger gain's in hp/tq..it's a fact

Is this really the same 4.0? If it is, hello after-market! :D

yes, it's supposed to be the same

rumors are all true... 05 V6 stang will have the same 4liter SOHC engine thats in the explorer.

ford should fix the problems with the timing chains before they start throwing in every car with a v6

The 4.0sohc are pretty good motors i think. I have a 99 with 55k miles on it and i have no problem other than nedding to replace the iac valve and the recall for the lower intake and timming chain guides. I wish that were was a larger aftermarket fot the six's but there isn't. Apten in currently working on heads for the 4.0 ohv and sohc. What is the diffenece between the sohc and the ohv other than 45hp and head difference. Could you make a ohv motor be almost as powerful as a sohc by putting sohc heads on a ohv motor.

They are fixed. And besides, mine has 121K miles on it. I think it's a great motor, and I can't wait to see what a 5-speed manual SOHC will do in a MUCH lighter body with some short gears.

Can't comment on either 4.0L engine. The 5.0 motor is an all time great in my opinion. Having owned a 1993 F-150 (130k) with the 5.0 and a 1990 Mustang GT (80k)and never having any problems with the engine, how can you complain?

Gas mileage with the 5.0 is good for a V8, much better than my 5.2 318 CID Dodge Ram 1500. If you are so concerned about fuel economy, buy an Escort or Focus and not an Explorer.

What' I'm curious about is how much better is the SOHC 6 Cyl than the pushrod one?

Eric

4.0 sohc 1/4 time

i know for a fact the 5.0 is a great motor but i think the 4.0 sohc will out run most of the 5.0 explorers my 99 sport sohc has chip kn filter and flowmaster it runs 15.52 1/4 mile @ 88mph http://mysite.verizon.net/vze4qnkc/

It is a better motor, not matter what the OHV guys will tell you, especially when it comes to power. Develops peak torque around the same RPM range, and has almost 40 more peak horsepower? Hmm... ;)

As well, even though we have the somewhat annoying timing chain rattle, OHV owners have those noisy wrist pins (Note this does not apply to Pre-99 or so). There's a reason the SOHC is now the base motor. The good thing about the OHV is that it does have a slightly stronger valvetrain system, but the SOHC is the superior motor.

but if you do the same mod's to a 5.0 the 5.0 will SMOKE your 4.0..fact..now stock your sport sohc might take a 4DOOR 5.0..but you don't have the other door's..ect

if you did the same mods to a 5.0 you would be right back where you started the sohc has a 5speed tranny compared to the 4speed that the 5.0 has. however the 5.0 does have many more mods available for it
