4.10 gears are going to cost me $700 for the two sets and approx $800 to install. I've heard that Rangers came stock with 4.10 gears. When I'm phoning wrekcing places looking for those, what is the axle code on the door for 4.10's?

Also are there going to be any prblems with swapping the gears from a Ranger to an Explorer?

And further, do Rangers come with Dana 35's as stock? If they do what year did they switch from Dana 28 to Dana 35?

The Rangers are 28 spline, with the exception of the FX4, which is 31 spline (like the the Explorer).

All 8.8 rear axle gears are intechangeable, meaning even 4.10's for a 8.8 Mustang will bolt into your Explorer 31 spline rear.

You can get 4.10's from Ford Motor Sports or summit for around $175 for the 8.8. The fronts from Spicer are about $160.

If you can find a ranger with 4.10's they will work, the Ranger kept the D35 front TTB axle until 97 I believe.

Explorer's also came with 4.10 gears, it's not stock on any trucks it was a factory option.

I jsut re-geared my truck to 4.10's, it cost me a little over $1000 total with my rear limited slip rebuilt, and the front carrier out of the truck. IF you have the gears installed in the front axle while it is in the truck it will cost you alot more simply because they have to do all the labor...

good luck! Oh and I still have front and rear 3.73's for sale in good condition cheap!!!

$800 to install? $800 TO INSTALL?!?!? um, check for install somewere else... high side should be around $200 an end... or $400 total install price.

Dont forget you get what you pay for. $800 to install front and rear gears in a ttb truck is not all that much, especially when you are taking it to somebody you trust....

I paid $300 for my rear gear setup with a rebuild on my factory limited slip. I paid $150 to have the front 4.10 gears setup into a D35 carreir that was already fitted with a used ARB and 4.56's. and out of the truck.
Whatyou are paying for is time, obviously the rear is a snap to access, but the front carreir in the truck on a TTB setup is not so simple, it takes time....

Besides you want to take it to a reputable shop who will do it right, these guys even washed and re-painted my diff cover for me, they also stand behind their work which is obvious because the passenger side axle seal was leaking and it is in the shop right now being fixed. After my 500 mile gear break in period I changed the fluid and spent $50 or so on Mobil one synth gear lube, they are refilling it with synthetic at no charge once they fix the axle seal.
Also they gave me a full diagnosis on the condition of my rear disc brakes, wheel bearings, and parking brake.
I would rather pay the few extra $$$ to have service like that then to have some shop say "tough luck, we're booked solid until next month, then charge me extra for synthetic fluid, and not care enough to tell me about and other problems they may find in there.......

So yes it is smart to shop around for the best price, but the best deal doesnt always come with the lowest price.....

Ya, I got quoted at one place $400 for the front, $300 for rear if I took the center sections out myself and took it in. THe other place quoted 7 hours for the rear and 10 hours for the front, total of $1275.
I figured its probably just easier for me to rip two entire axles off of a ranger or mustang than pay almost $2000 just to get regeared.

410fortune, how cheap is cheap? The value of the canadian dollar and shipping suddenly makes cheap not so cheap up here. ALso when the gears were taken out were they marked so that they can be fitted again? I might be interested...Actually I'll PM you.

410- i do realize you get what you pay for. i am now thinking that maybe i live in a "cheap gearswap" part of the U.S.:p most places around here charge 150-175 an end for solid axle and 200-225 an end for IFS or Ford's Twin Tractor Beam. when i swapped gears in my Tahoe, it was $150 for the rear, and $200 for the front (IFS). when i did it in my early bronc, i did it myself (with help of VERY experienced gear/friend). maybe i jumped the gun a little, it just shocked me at first. and BTW, there are only two types of shops around here that do gear swaps: the ones who do beyond good job (like you mentioned) and the ones that dont do gears at all... i guess i should just consider myself lucky...

That sounds like a good deal! I could have gotten them done much cheaper, but these guys at Wild West Off Road are friends of Brett's and he has never steered me wrong. PLus they were willing to let me bring in my own parts and tell it to me straight, plus install and test a used ARB for me. They also rebuilt my LS for a little more grip. I am lucky, my best friend works at the largest drivetrain place in the Midwest and I am able to get a price break on most parts, so I got the actual gears and install kits for el cheapo!!!

The parking brake parts from Ford and the two hours to install those is what killed my total bill!!!

Also I ended up having to return my first set of rear gears to my buddy and have the install shop overnight a set of precision 4.10's for the 8.8, because the recommended highly against using the Motive 4.10's I had supplied, something about italian metal, big tires, and tons of noise, so I decided to take their advice, pay the hefty shipping charges, and go with the precision gears. This is how things go with my truck, I am used to it. Driving with the 4.10's however have made up for it! One of the best mods I have made!!! especially when towing, it;s like night and day....
Oh and I also thought $150 for the front carrier complete with ARB install and test was a fantastic deal!!!!
