2005 Explorer Limited
2005 Ford Mustang
Horsepower: 300 hp @ 5750 rpm
Torque: 320 ft-lbs @ 4500 rpm

2005 Ford Explorer
Horsepower 239 @ 4000 RPM
Torque (lb-ft) 282 @ 4000 RPM

Whats different in these motors and what from a Mustage's 4.6L will improve the Explorers 4.6L

as they may have the same 4.6 liter block im sure most of the engine itself if different. different cam heads intake manifold pistons....and so fourth. the explorers 4.6 is set up more for torque because its a bigger car and made to hold more people and also be able to tow things. different uses=different engine setup

Mustage
11.5 lbs per 1 HP
10.8 lbs per 1 ft-lbs Torque

vs

Explorer
18.7 lbs per 1 HP
15.8 lbs per 1 ft-lbs Torque

I think the Mustage has a little better Torque to HP rating. I know I Explorer shouldn't be as fast as a Mustage. I was just wondering if changing some parts would help boost the explorer a little.

The explorers are 2v heads, the mustangs are 3V. So everything that is different to enable that would need to be changed. You'd be better off, and probably cheaper, just supercharging the explorer engine. Cost would be similar, but S/C will get you around 50% power and torque increase, not 20%.

It's pretty easy to upgrade.

Step 1. Remove Explorer radiator cap
Step 2. Drive Explorer out from under radiator cap
Step 3. Drive Mustang in under radiator cap
Step 4. Replace radiator cap.

Voila! Instant horsepower improvement!

:D

Actually, as mentioned above, all 4.6's are not created equal. the 2V heads vs. the 3V heads makes a huge difference. Forced induction is probably the best bet for increasing the Explorer hp significantly.

yea it really is if u want to go through the trouble but if u do forced induction u have to get it installed and tuned. if u want to avoid the hassel ide go with a cold air intake exhaust headers shift kit and a programer and tune. bolt ons r a good way to get easy hp that the factory parts have restricted without dealing with engine work and forced induction and such. plus its much cheaper lol

Take a look at what 99-04 Mustang guys do. They have 2v 4.6's just like the Ex's. My buddy has a 2002 Stang GT and he has a friend that owns a Ford specific performance shop. He's looking into mods for my EB for me.

the 2 are completly different motors .. the 05 mustang has a aluminum block where the 05 explorer has a iron block they have different everything heads, cams you name it... 2 valve vs 3 valve...

Actually, I believe all Explorers with the 4.6L V8 were aluminum. The 1999-2004 Mustangs had an iron block.

Not all of 'em. The 03-04 Mach Motors are all aluminum with 4V heads.

Mach 1 is a cobra w/o the eaton

Not quite. Different compression, different heads, different cams different intake. Lots more forged parts in the Cobra motor, etc. A long list of differences.

I think 99- 02 (or 04) mustangs are pretty capadable with our 3rd gen Explorers/Mountaineers.

Which means you can order an eaton style supercharger for those mustang GT's then bolt it on your Explorer/Mounty, but there ARE modifications you must do to convert it over...........i dont think its that hard.
Judging from pics on google of mustangs vs explorers/mounties, there are clearance issues and slight differences.
I know on mustangs theres alot more room in the front of the motor, because the fan is thinner and theres a larger gap between the fan and front of the engine, which is why they make Vortech, etc style superchargers for mustangs, but not for Explorers or Mounties......because Explorers/mounties have zero room in front of the engine for that style of supercharger......but they CAN fit an overhead Eaton style supercharger, since the tops of mustang GT's and Explorers/Mounties are very similar
(i think certain years of mustangs are almost exactly the same as explorers/mounties, just the internals may be slightly different)

Okay, I figured we were talking about 02'-04' Mustang GT's since the OP didn't specify. 02'-05' Explorers had a 2V aluminum V8. 06'-09' Explorer are aluminum 3V V8, very similiar to the 05'-09' Mustangs. 03'-04' Cobra's had an iron block, aluminum heads with h-beam rods, forged crank and 4V heads with an eaton m90 supercharger. I know that Mach's had an aluminum block and 4V heads, a manuel mach had a cast iron crank and auto's had a forged crank. Aviators had an all aluminum 4V motor that was similar to the Mach 1. This is what I can remember off the top of my head, If I am wrong then sorry. If the OP wants to specify which mustang he had in mind then we can go from there and be more helpful.

Forget what I posted if it shows up, I finally reread the post and he did specify the motors he wanted to know and the webpage above I'm sure is useful. 2005 Explorer is a 2V and the 2005 Mustang is a 3V.

for the average joe, the mach I is a cobra w/o an eaton :D

between the 2vs from the explorer to the 2V mustang 99-04 the motor is the same minus the explorer got the aluminum block. The first thing you could do is a cat back and a tuner like the xcalibrator 2
