I went to get my exhaust changed today (flowmaster 50 hehe) and the guy said wow wtf, you gotta come look at this.

After the third guy getting pulled over I slid on in behind him and they showed me what they were gawking at. My 01 sport has 4 friggen cats. WTF. They said I would be much better off going with magnaflow.

Really everything is a special order or special ordeal with this truck...

fml lol

Is there any reason I need 4 cats? I mean isn't that overkill in the extreme?

Touchy subject, my short experience was that my '97's 4 cats were replaced with 2 new ones by the dealer.

Your exhaust shop doesn't seem to have much experience, considering one of the top ten selling vehicles of all time does indeed have 4 catalytic converters, and this is the first time they have seen them.

^^Must have been Amateur Hour at the exhaust shop...

...and why did they say that 'since you have 4 cat's, your better off going with a magnaflow'??....

What does 4 cat's have anything to do with the brand/style of muffler they recommended over the other?

And on the subject of catalytic convertors.....You live in California. They came on your vehicle. You can't do anything about it. Deal with it. Done.

Didn't notice till now that you are living in California??? Next time when you go to vote, think about everything that you overpay in your state and why.
And BTW, you will fail state emission inspection without them.

Ya, I am overpaying for everything. I hate this state. Believe me, I wish I could take orders some place better. When I got orders back here, my only other options (I was oversea's at the time) was Afghanistan, Chicago, Nor####, Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait, California, or Afghanistan. Yes again...

So I guess I kinda got stuck with the lesser of the evils haha.

I dont know why he said magnaflow would be better, but that it would be with that many cats. I know the pipe with all of them on it has a much larger ID then couples to a smaller ID pipe to the muffler then pipe to exit is that same smaller ID.

He also said you lose up to ~10hp / cat although that seems fishy to me.

I'd go find another shop, this guy seems to be blowing smoke.

when i went to put the magnaflow they said u only need two for your truck to pass emmissions. still sounds good but i wish i took off all four

Your shop doesn't know their ass from a hole in the ground either.

Nobody in US can take all of them off. As for two of them, maybe makes a difference if your truck is registered in other state (being military you can keep it like that)... don't know exactly what CA requires.

But cats are not the reason you don't have enough "power".

what these guys said.
catalytic converters are a federal requirement.
iirc, federal law states no emissions equipment can be modified; which means you cannot remove any of the cats.
only removing the 2 rear-most is a gray area.

and yeah, find a new shop.

This has been my understanding.

Yup, sounds to me like these guys dont know their ***** from their elbows. Know what else had four cats? My 2000 F-150... and my 99 Explorer... I think my 98 F-150 may have even had four. I haven't checked but I'm pretty sure even my 2010 escape with the 2.5L 4-cylinder might have four cats on it. And if they even think of replacing them, or think your power is going to go way up by replacing them, then run, don't walk out of that store and tell everyone you know to never set foot in there again.

Ya it's better safe than sorry. It is kinda funny tho. Unless you live in/near a major metro area, most of the country doesn't have any emission requirements. How would anyone know? I have never known a cop to climb under a car/truck to look at exhaust equipment.

Happened to me twice up here in Maine.

Once in my 92 Ranger and once in my 88 Mustang.

-Pulled over for loud exhaust in my Ranger, cop took a look under. "You don't have any cats, and your exhaust exits to the side in front of the rear wheel".
Got a court summons for "illegal modification". Got out of that, brought in a fake work order saying the stock exhaust was put back on.

-Mustang, turbo 2.3L full 3" exhaust straight piped. Pulled over, cop got underneath and asked how I got a sticker with no muffler, and no cats. "Just bought it like this". Let me off with "If I hear or see you around here again the car's getting towed".

lol

Knowingly providing a forgery to a court of law - all I can say is WOW, DUMB! Aggraved Forgery in state of Maine is class B crime punishable by up to ten years incarceration and a $20,000 fine. I would not go bragging about that if I were you.
