You didn't say what year your truck is, but if it is a 1994 or older you can do this.
If you are going to do a lot of four wheeling, you might as well go with a 5.5 lift from Superlift, then you don't have to do any cutting. You can run 33" tires on 8.5 rims and should have no trouble clearing.
If you go with a 4" lift, down the road you will wish you would have gone just a little more, so do it right a way.

the 5.5 actually sounds good but will i have to modify everything? like my driveshafts, brakelines, steering shaft/pitman arm????????????? any idea on reliability and any thoughts on superlifts soa conversion plates? i read somewhere that if you go with a lift over 4 you will need to modify your driveshafts ie new ones and if i go with 33 what will my gewaring have to be to have about stock performance? i have a 1994 xlt with 3.73 auto 4.0 ohv lim slip in back etc

Personally, I'm a huge fan of Sky Jacker...They have an excellent Class II 4in lift and I had it and loved it! I just wanted to go bigger, so I added 6in springs to that lift.

You shouldn't have to modify driveshafts for a Superlift 5.5" or Skyjacker 6". The Superlift SOA is, IMHO, way better than replacing the SUA springs withed arched leafs. Even with a 4" you will have to replace your pitman arm and get new brakelines. YOU WILL NOT REGRET GOING 5.5" OVER 4". Better and cheaper.

Just my 2 cents.

thanx dale any one else think i have to modify driveshafts for 5.5 or will my driveshafts just overextend and fall off when i articulate?????? or will they be fine???

Ive got the 6in sky jacker and my drive shafts are fine...Although one day I'm gonna get new ones one day, just to get some stronger units under my truck.

I have a TrailMaster 4"....

... and I have had no problems with it at all. I have a '92 XLT w/35's

Does me right in every way so far. Check it out before you by the 5.5 SuperLift with the bad radius arms. I still run the stock radius arms right now.

Re: I have a TrailMaster 4

What about those tire and rim packages that offer 33x12.5 on 15x10. Is that not good, is 8.5 a better size for 12.5 wide tires if so why.

aghhhhhhhhhh

any one else have more on experience with 5.5 and driveshafts? what tire and rim with it? whats IMHO and SUA???????? more experience/problems with 5.5 or 4????

I run a 5.5 lift with 33" tires and 15x10 rims, but I did have to cut my fenders but I think that is because of the offset of my rims. They stick out farther then most of the other Explorers.
I have not had to do anything with the driveshaft, but you do have to buy the extended brake lines and I had to change the "E" brake line which was just a matter of buying a ext. cab Ranger one.

Check out the pictures here and my web page for pictures of the Explorer.
I also run without a rear swaybar and I unhook the front when four wheeling which gives you even more droop.
Hope this will help.

Rims

i went with an eight inch rim over the 10 because it is a little harder to unset the bead when it's aired down. The 10 inch is more likely to lose a bead than an 8. Not saying that an 8 wont, but the chances are a little greater with a wider rim like the 10. On the other hand the 10 will make a 12.5 wide tire have a farely flat sidewall. I would go with an 8 inch rim if your going to run 33/12.5/15. Thats what i have and many others and it works and looks good. If you go with an 8 inch rim make sure the offset is 3.5 that way you won't rub as much.

hehe...i would say go with the 4 inch Fabtech lift. But you're one of those 4wd guys. :P

hew whats that your one of those guys mean? i thought fabtech only did 4x2 i have a 4x4 im not closed to the idea of a 4 though i just need more info on both of them the more replies i get the easier it will be for me to make a decision

Best 4" Lift

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, most of the replies are about the 5.5" Superlift. I really want to know about a 4" lift. Which is the best for my application of snow and ice and smooth ride?

Trying to clarify

maybe ill try to correct this i want info on both 4 and 5.5 i dont care which brands i just want to get personal experience posts so i can base my purchase

4 or 5.5 inch lift

What kind of wheeling do you do? If you do go offroad, go with the 5.5"
I have a 91xlt with a combo, 4 inch TuffCountry lift up front and skyjacker rear springs.
Stay away from Tuff Country. I have had nothing but problems. I can not get my front end to stay aligned.
Also, am running 33x12.5 on 8" rims.
I would suggest paying a few more bucks for a skyjacker 5.5 They seem to have a better front end.

i dont do much wheeling but when i do it is all or nothing i also use my truck to commute 40 round trip everyday 5 days a week round trip and a lot of city driving

Go with the 4in skyjacker class II. It's expensive, but gives a great ride!

Fabtech

FAbtech does alot of prerunner trucks.. Thats there main stay actually. Fabtech lifts are also alot of $$. Alot more than any of the other lifts out there unless you go custom. As of right now i dont think that Fabtech has a lift for the 4x4 explorer. You could email them at http://www.fabtechmotorsports.com They reply quickly. My kit is awesome, rides great, and articulates well.
