My 91' Sport is acting a fool. The four wheel drive computer doesn't really work anymore. My friend the ford tech told me where to find the box, and how to run the self test. Much to my dismay, it faulted out.

My question is, can these modules be repaired, or do they have to be replaced. The list price at my local dealership is $500!!! I don't want/need to buy a new one. Is there some way to bypass, or to make the situation manual, as apposed to electronic?

Thanks all!

-Rick

PS: is the "electromagical transmixer" limited to the transmission, or can the magic go as far as the transfer case?

If you are looking for a easy fix you could go to a junk yard and get a new computer. I had to get a new computer and the 4x4 motor that engages the 4x4 and now everything works fine. It cost about $20. Or you could switch to manual hubs for better offroading.

manual hubs have nothing to do with the shift motor computer :)

Junk yard 4x4 computer is CHEAP CHEAP especially if you pull it yourself.

My 1988 push button 4x4 still works at 300K miles... I have rebuilt the actual shift motor 3 times I think

You can convert your truck to use a BW1354 manual transfer case, if you can get your hands on one. This eliminates the touch button 4x4 and gives you a manual lever in the floor. Try searching for 1354 manual

There are several home brew methods of shifting the electric shift t case by hand floating around as well. The Mcneil trucks use a very cool and trick cable operated rotating lever mounted behind the front seats, very simple design.

I like my touch drive 4x4, as long as I can keep it working! so far so good.....if it goes out on the trial the t case can be shifted with a pair of plyers if you remove the shift motor (3 10mm bolts)

Thanks guys for the speedy reply. I guess it's off to the junk yard for me. Thanks again.

I have a 4wd Computer from a `91 that I GUARANTEE works.....

$15 to your door.

Let me know...

And I have one that I just threw onto the ground last night out of my explorer if you are interested:D:D

Like 410 said, keep your shift motor clean and running nice, or climb under the truck everytime with some pliers or a socket to engage 4x4(PITA sometimes when it's dirty or muddy), or swap in a manual system like the one I'm shipping out tomorrow;)
