Well, I guess it's that much because I went and got an estimate from the best body shop in Richmond, VA. Crappy thing is....they won't even paint it a different color....I wanna go from the factory goldish brown to a gun-metal grey. Oh well....I guess I'll start saving my money after I finish my engine work :)

Which shop? I suggest Burton's or some other one that I can't think of the name right now (they are actually the best IMHO, but very $$$). I will think of it in a little while.

Just a FYI, if you change the color of your Explorer if you ever to to sell it you won't get much for it.
Also it costs as much to jam the inside of your doors and under the hood etc. as it does to paint the outside of the vehicle.

Sorry, I forgot to mention, mine isn't your ordinary change your color paint job.
Mine is special so it's worth more then when it was just plain white!!!! ;) :D lol

i am having my dads friend do my rocker panels, a fender, and a small part of the rear hatch, i hope that stays at or around $600...

A friend of mine had his pantera painted, he did a lot of the prep work himself as far as sanding the panels, etc. and it still cost him about $7000. Because he needed a show-quality paint job that paid attention to detail. Problem is for the real detailed job your talking about removing engine components to spray the firewall, removing certain panels to paint behind them, etc.

That's about right. When I had mine painted from blue to metallic fireball red, I had to extract the engine, take off all moldings, take off the roof rack and mask the entire interior of the vehicle. I had it towed to the paint shop and all surfaces with a blue color were painted red including all jambs, firewall and hood interior.
It doesn't lower the value of your vehicle if you change color if you have a quality paint job. Custom or quality paint jobs can ultimately increase the resale value, though not by a significant amount. It all comes down to whether or not you really want a different color, or if you want to revitalize your current one.
It's definitely worth it after you wax it for the first time...:D
