4r70 transfitting top and bottom ?

hi people have a 1999 mountaineer 5.0l awd need to know which fitting top or bottom goes to top fitting on radiator ty

I can't tell you which one it is, but I can tell you how to figure it out: One goes to the radiator. From the radiator, if you have an auxiliary trans cooler, it will go from the radiator to the cooler, then back to the trans.

That being said, it would appear to be the top one from the diagrams, but don't quote me on that...
 






On my 99 5.0, the top radiator fitting is the one From the trans. The bottom one returns TO the trans...well, aux cooler first. Which is exactly opposite of what I would think.
 






the 4r70w is backwards from the factory as Cobraguy stated
I believe the old AOD was reverse so it can really confuse some Ford guys.

On the AODE/4R70W transmission, fluid leaves the transmission through the lower case fitting, and returns from the cooler through the upper case fitting. Please note, this is NOT true for the AOD.
