First off this is out of a 98 f150 4.6 4x4 truck. The problem I'm having started a few days back. Was driving the truck an after we stopped an got back in to leave the truck would not go in gear. The shifter would go into drive an all that but wont move. The only way we could get it home was to throw it in 4low. The truck will start up just fine. while running the linkage an all seems to move like it should, I checked to see if its move in the tranny an it is. If you try to put it back in drive while running it makes a horrible grinding noise. Also when you have it parked an not running your able to physical push the truck an move it. I toke the pan off an there are no shavings or loose parts an fluid is good. Could the valve body need to be rebuilt? Or could it be a sensor/solinoed or something in or on the transmission? Also if someone could help me with a tear down of the valve body an rebuild that would be greatly appreciated. Any help an advice would be great an very helpful.

That almost sounds like a transfer case issue actually--is it an electric shift transfer case?

It has the 4x4 knob on the dash so Im thinking yes. What are some things I should look for or try? Thanks for your reply Turdle

Usually right befor the tail shaft and at least on the last auto I tore apart (a 700r4/4L60) everything had to come out of the case.....im not sure about a 4R70 though. Hope this helps even though its bad news

well just tore the transfer case apart an what ya know the gears are all ate up an broke. Would it be just cheaper an best to get a used one from a salvage yard? or can they be rebuilt pretty easy?

Problems with 4r70w

I just recently rebuilt my transmission changed all seals hard parts plates and pistons/accumulators torque convector is brand new well rebuilt by a mechnic all except for the valve body and internal sensors and electronic belt but I always have the same problem the pickup (F150 V8 4.6L AT 4x2) works for a week and then doesn't want to shift at all it'll rev up with making any shifts and then suddenly not move at all......I have to turn it off and then turn it back on and it'll run for about 2.5 miles and happen all over again. Any Ideas Please?

Threw in a used transfer case an she moves finally, once again thanks for all your help
