I bought my 94 explorer back in august of 2008 and the 4WD hasn't worked since I got it. It's the electronic push button type 4x4 and I'm not sure if it is the electronic switch in the transfer case that is gone to not make the 4x4 work, or if it is the wiring in the buttons themselves. Any ideas on how I could possibly figure out what the problem is or has anyone else had this problem?

To be completely sure, How are you putting it into 4wd?
You have to have the truck in neutral and foot on brake to get it into 4lo (not sure about 4hi though, but i would assume the same.)

it was in N and foot on the brake and when I push the button, there is a definite clicking noise, sounding like something should be engaging but the lights does not come on. any idea?

I had the same problem. Mine ended up being the shift motor thats on the side of the transfer case. i believe there is a rebuild kit for those shift motors. i had an extra explorer for parts so i jus swapped them out and now it works fine. The clicking comes from the 4x4 module in the back i believe

This is the link to fix your 4x4. its a very common problem that everyone has. Its always the same thing. If you check at the top of this forum in the sticky's it says...
Trouble shooting your 4x4.
Try checking that.
Brianmc rebuild your shifter motor and your 4x4 woes will go the way of the dodo.
Good luck.

..There is also a bunch of 4x4 troubleshooting info to be found in the "How To" in my signature...;)

thanks for all the input, i didn't even think to search the forums for my problem until after i posted it. sorry for being "that guy" and asking the question that everyone else has asked 800 times. i'm currently in the process of rebuilding the motor, the bushing was in 15 pieces. I just have to put everything back together and stuff it back under my car. thanks again!
