Yep! On my '06 XLS 4.L the same problem. Sometimes the 4 Low works and sometimes not. I don't know what the problem is. I checked the fuses too. It's either the switch or the control module or something. I don't use low range that much, so I'm trying not to worry about it. The diagnostic process is a lengthy one. I asked about this on a thread several months ago.

You're putting it in neutral AND pressing on the brake pedal, correct?

Yep! Neutral w/ foot on brake. I've been driving Explorers since '96. It's a weird thing...sometimes 4 Low works fine and then it won't work for a while.
I dunno.

yes n/w foot on brake it is weird though sometimes it works and sometimes it does not

I can put my in 4 low when its in park.

I had this problem and the dealer said it was a loose connection and fixed it... it's happening again after a couple of months. I don't use low more than a couple times a summer, but I want it to work!

I try not to think about it. Don't need to use that gear at all. If I'm not mistaken, the diagnostic process to figure this one out is about 100 steps long. It's just more trouble than it's worth. Gotta know when to fold 'em.

Same problem with my '93..(gen.1)......found another module from a junk yard and the same thing .........have checked connectors, taken the dash board 'micro switch array' apart and cleaned it, took the module apart and cleaned up the circuit board............I'm not sure if a rebuild on the shift motor is in order but that is the next thing on the list..........There really isn't anything left to check............again, this problem is mostly intermittent but becoming the norm.

Mine has a similar problem. I found that to get to 4-LO I have to first engage 4-HI. The magic sequence for me is 1) Stop 2) Neutral 3) Foot on brake 4) 4-Hi 5) 4-Lo

Good to know....I'll try it.

Mine works sometimes on my 2006 V8.

I can put in N, foot on brake, push lo, button light flashes, a few seconds go by and then a ping then a twang and dash 4xlow is lit up and I do have low range as I try reverse and forward.
I push 4hi or 4auto and after a few seconds I get the ping and then a twang. I can do this several times and it will work, then abruptly 4lo does not work, doesn't even flash/blink. I just say screw it and quit messing with it.

A few days later I may try it and the 4lo blinks, goes ping and then twang and it is working, sometimes it won't work at all. I think there may be a relay under dash passenger side as there is where the ping, twang seems to be coming from.

I will have to get wifey to help so I can get closer to noise to see if I can locate it.
