I got a buddy whose 4wd on his 93 explorer won't engage....he said he looked under the hood and their seems to be a hose missing.....Is the early model explorer have a Vacum operated system for engaging the front axle...I know it is push button 4wd..any help would be greatly appreciated
The four wheel system is activated by an electric motor in the transfer case. (I've no idea what this missing tube on you friend's X does.) A lot of the time these motors get stuck for lack of use. Some people have had luck tapping the motor (on the transfer case) with a hammer. Others have had to remove the electric motor and clean the brushes and windings. If you do a search you'll find more info. There's also a great help site at Dead Link Removed that does a great job of explaining the whole procedure. Also have your friend listen for a clicking in the back inside on the passenger side. This is the relay. If you don't hear this click when engaging the 4 wheel it's probably a wiring or switch prob. Good luck.
i dont know if this will help but when my 93 x wouldnt ingage in 4wd i took it to the dealership and they said it was the sweeper on the transfer case. i dont remember how expensive it was but that was the problem.you might wanna check that out......Travis.............GOD BLESS AMERICA
