I have a '92 Explorer 4x4 with manual lock outs. I am having a problem with it wanting to disengage from 4 wheel drive. Pushing the botton to turn off wont work. I have to hit the brake quick and it disengages. Any ideas as to why and what I need to do to fix it? Thanks

I reccomend changing the ATF in the transfer case and at the same time clean out the solenoid (sp?) on the back of it.

Are you referring to the transfer case fluid? If so, that is the first thing I did. It still does it.

you do know that you have to drive in reverse about 5-10 feet for 4X4 to disengage, dont you? or is that only for the automatic hubs?

Hehe... I have never heard that. I have owned my explorer for 4 years and have never had to drive in reverse to disengage it from 4 wheel drive. In fact, you should be able to do it at anytime going down the road at any speed. I have the manual lock outs.

Backing up 5-10 feet is to unlock the auto hubs. It does absolutely nothing if you are running manual hubs. I would think that it might be a tcase motor issue. Check out Dead Link Removed For info on troubleshooting/rebuilding the motor.

yeah i wasnt sure about the manuals but i know i had to do that with my auto hubs. i could hear them disengage when i went in reverse.

Hey guys.. been a while since I commented on this topic. I dont have the problem any more. One day I decided to get new tires but on for winter. After that, it disengaged just fine. Seems as if maybe there was a difference in tire height. At least enough to cause it to bind. I would have never thought of that...
