Has anyone ever had to replace their 4wheel drive Controller? I brought my 2002 explorer into ford to get some warranty work done before my extended warranty went out. When I took the truck in, the 4x4 drive worked, now it doesn't.....Took it back less than 24 hours later, and they said it was nothing they did.

Now they want $500 to replace the 4 wheel drive controller.....Not a happy camper. I can get the part for $288 at Ford, is this something I could install myself? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Yes had my changed under my extended warranty. I think it was like $530 or so.
It can be changed by you. Give the forum a search for instructions.

I never heard of one just going bad one day to another. Have you checked your fuses? Mine started to lock the truck into 4x4 and got worse and worse. If its just not working maybe something is disconnected.

PS I don't trust them dealers.

Good Luck

Well looking at other posts it seems the control modules can go bad just by disconnecting the battery. See this post, three pages worth, http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=163694

Go to dealer and get a quote on the part yourself, you will need the VIN, price will vary greatly based on the VIN, mine is $250 at a dealership. Also check the web site for a price from the aforementioned post.

Yes you can replace yourself, it does not look that difficult, I have a Haynes repair Manual and it is discussed in there.

Buy it your self and install it your self. It is simple to do. Don't let the dealer do it since it is so easy to do. I sent you a number to your e-mail where i got mine.
Good Luck

Huh? There's a TSB on this? Do you have the text of the TSB you could paste into a message here? I'd like to see if the description in the TSB matches the problems we've been hearing about here. Thanks.
