My truck has recently been having issues in 4x4 lately my left side has been making a horrible sound that's obviously metal on metal contact. Can you guys give me a list of parts to check so I can get this fixed? Chicago just got hit with 2 feet of snow so I really need the 4x4 fixed. Thanks guys

Have you checked the brake pads??

That would be the first thing to check (and the cheapest) However it really sounds like you have a bad hub assembely. If your abs light is on it is an indication of a bad hub assy. Not a terribly difficult fix but you will need a GOOD set of deep well sockets, an ox/acet torch and ideally an impact wrench.
Cost os a hundred (US) or so but you get a new abs sensor and cable out of the deal too.

Good luck, Brad

(ps) you can find detailed instructions for the hub changeout on this site.

I just changed my brake pads this summer and like I said it only does it with 4x4 engaged. My abs light has been on since I bought the truck a few years ago. If I don't have a torch can I still do this myself?

If you can do a brake job, you can definitely do this yourself with hand tools including a long breaker bar and some PB blaster or WD40. Check the sticky in this section. It has good pics and walks you right through. You will not need a torch, just soak the hub bolts with penentrating oil. Maybe a 2 hour job the first time.

thanks guys, i can't wait to get this fixed this weekend so i can finally use my 4x4 for what it was intended
