4x4 will not engage 91 sport

1991 explorer sport Automatic, pushing either button on the dash does not work to engage 4x4. Looked at the rear inside the truck by the tire well and some sort of red lite comes on. Please advise step by step how I can tell whats wrong. Hardly ever use 4x4 function. THANKS, Joe
