4x4 ???

Background info:

a couple of years ago i had the factory auto-lockers replaced with what was recomended on this forum, the warn manuals.

as recommended, i drove around all winter with the hubs locked and when i needed 4x4, i would just push the button and jumpin-jehosaphat-jehad, i would be in four wheel drive.

Current issue:

it is now cold and wintery here in wisconsin. i had planned on using the same method as last year, leavin' the hubs locked and etc.

but, now, it seems that i must press the button several times even up to a dozen, sometimes i just give up, before my 4x4 turns on. when i do push the button, i hear alot of clicking in the back area, sorta like when the blinker is going. but no dice. today it took me almost a mile and maybe a dozen clicks of the button before i got four wheel drive. what is happening?

sounds like the transfer case isn't shifting into 4wd right away


there have been other posts related to this one,

i believe there is a motor on the transfer case that gets dirty and sometimes it won't shift into 4wd right away, i think you can remove it and clean it or replace it

Could be the shift motor or possibly the relay. Test the relay, this is easy.
Pop the pannel that hides the jack and tire iron. Towards the front there is a small plastic box. There is a white (if memory sevres) button on it. Push the button. If you get a steady red light the motor needs repaired/replaced. If blinking the relay isnt working right.
From what you describe its probably the motor. There is a thread somewhere on cleaning it. Fairly easy task really

i had the same issue and yes take the motor off the t case and take it apart and clean it but be careful of the springs inside. there is a complete post on how to do this and it took me about 40 mins to fix. 4x4 is still workin fine.

The "springs" I believe he is refering to are the brush springs. Just dont lose them. They are a little tricky to put back in but you gotta deal
