I've had my 99 mounty for a few months now and have had a chirp that seems to come whenever it has rained recently. Its got 110k on it and has been very meticulously maintained by the dealer. The sound is like when the water pump on my 4.0 went out. Could it be the water pump at 110k, or the cps? I plan on trying a new belt next week and inspecting it further.

my 98 explorer makes a chirping noise, on mine it's just the belt slipping a little cuz of the moisture.

Good to know, I was a little confused because I wouldnt suspect a truck maintained this well to be having problems yet.

It could also be a bering going out in an idler pulley, or the camshaft possition sensor starting to go bad.

Would the cps/synchro be effected by the weather at all? Idler pulley is another possible candidate.

Yes. My PCS would not make noies when it was warm out. If it was damp and/or cold it would chirp like a bird. It got to where it squeeled like a ****.

How in the hell it didn't leave me stranded some where I'll never know. FUBAR doesn't describe what it looked like.

I'm going to pull the belt this weekend and hopefully be able to pinpoint the noise. Is there any how to threads on the cps?

Mine used to do that until I changed the belt. I recommend Goodyear Gatorback belts (as was also recommended to me on the site). Any time I had a car wash or the weather was wet, it chirped for a long time before it would dry out and then go quiet again.

Haven't had any issues since I swapped the belt. Can't hurt to try. I think I paid $30 for the belt. Money well spent.
