I have the fan out of my sport since I am doing a timing cover gasket. When I get the radiator back in I am going to measure the space and possibly order one of the HHR fans just to see if I can make it fit.
I found some stress cracks on my 5.0 fan so I am not sure how much life is left in it anyway.
well over the weekend I picked up a efan from a 96 mark viii for $15 from the local bone yard, and have the Mounty all taken apart as I needed to do the water pump and I am going with an efan b/c at the time the clutch would not break loose from the pump itself. I tried everything that everyone posted to pull it put no such luck, so after several hours and man power I cut of the fan blades and 1/2 cut through the now stripped but, it turned off like it was melting butter. So now I am installing the fan in the truck which has a ful core radiator, not the thin ones, and yes the fan motor is deep so I will show you how it turns out for me.
You should have believed others, the Mark VIII and Taurus fan motors are thicker than the 3.5" of space in the V8 Explorers. I have both of those fans and checked them long ago. I've mentioned this before.
I haven'y seen those posts but I have made just modifications on it, and I do believe it will fit now, but I will let you know when I am done. I know it is no task of just droping it in. As of right now I have the fan mounted inside the stock fan shorud with some minimal over hanging by the fan motor. There is some room to grind down the nipple on the fan and it is also offset to the passenger side at this time. I do believe I can fit it.
The fan motor shouldn't be offset too far to the side of the water pump. That would negate the effectiveness of the great fan blades, which my not even fit then.
The motor itself is too thick on the Mark VIII fan, it is thicker than the distance between the radiator and the water pump shaft.
I hope that you are right, because I wanted that fan to fit. I bought one, and I have grafted a fan to an OEM shroud before, on my 99 SOHC truck. Good luck,
Today I installed electric fans in my explorer. It was a 2 day process. Yesterday I saw this post then checked prices for the fans you guys have describe. I said #### that. I bet I can install something from the junk yard for cheaper that will pump tones of air.
The best fan I found was from a ford Windstar. I don't know what year it was but the fan was about 1.5 inches thick. The only problem was that the fan's mounts were broken and the yard didn't have any more Windstars with the same fan.
I found a ford Taurus SHO and pulled it's fans. I compared them to a regular Taurus they are the same. But its cooler to say my fans are from an SHO.
Hit farm and fleet for aluminum, some angel iron, electrical connectors and a few bolts.
Hit Autozone for and temperature switch that will activate the fan. Also grabbed a 3 way switch so I can have an over ride to lock the fan on.
I fit both fans in by staggering them. They pump a lot of air. A lot more than the stock mechanical does at idle.
I was hoping that the fans would reduce load on the engine. Thus given better fuel economy. But when I kick on the fans the alternator causes the engine to bog.
Try to make yourself invest in a progressive controller. The fans don't need to come on full speed all at once. The best controllers(only a couple) will gently and slowly turn on the fans, with low amperage to start. That is much better for the alternator, a low powered alternator can be killed by a strong fan turning on full speed all the time.
Volver, do you have the newer 1" rad core in your truck?
And yes without that 1" core you will be unable to mount a Mark 8 fan into the truck. I have made it to the point on the 97 2" thick rad core and I am a whole 1/4" short without destroying something. , needless to say I am waiting on my HHR fan to come in so I can install it and then drive the truck again.

I am running a 18" thunderbird fan in my big mounty. THE ONLY REASON IT FITS IS I am running a cheap replacement radiator with only half the core as normal. Even with the cheap radiator it never overheats.
In my little mounty I am running dual 12'' fans off a 2000 Mercury cougar. It fits perfect with the full size radiator. I turned it so the fans are stacked vertical.

Yes Don, I have the later model thin core radiator. It must be a 99-01 thing. It has adequate cooling capacity and allows for much more room to use an e-fan. I have an old water pump that I may try to trim some of the snout off of to see if it still holds together fine. It looks like the pulley mount is pressed onto the main shaft so if you cut too much off it may begin to slip.
I discovered all but one place I checked on sells only the single core 302 radiator. I bought the single core, it's new and from the same manufacturer as the original. I need the bigger core and I'm going to run it as cold as I can get it.
The WP front snout is very hard to cut. I suspect that it will not let go with minor trimming, if you can cut it. The heat created may kill the seals. If I did that, I think I'd only use a saw like a portable band saw.
well my water pump required replacing. I just picked one up from my local parts store - Advance Auto Parts. It is a AIRTEX Part # AW4101 , I cut off the threaded snout and then grinded down the remain portion and shot it with a coat of paint. I have some pictures of it and can post them when I get home from work
i have no issues with the pump and have gained additional clearance.
I also cut the snout on my garage floor with it out of the vehicle and ended up using a 4.5" grinder with cut off wheel and then finished smoothing it down with a grinding wheel.
Just like CDW stated the snout it a very hard metal and took some time to cut it down I would say I spent 30 minutes on it or so. I also ended up painting my pump black at the same time.
And here is my final product. yes its 1:45 am but I needed it to run. There are some items that I want to still touch up on it to maked the cut edges look better and clean it up.
I ordered one of the HHR fans yesterday and I have a plan to install it but I will need to make some more measurements once I receive it and come up with a detailed plan for trimming. It probably wont quite cover the entire core, but I am sure it will be fine.
