You got it right, the fan will not cover the whole core but does cover most of it. I installed the fan north/south, instead of the way it mounts in the HHR. I actually have mine retained in the factory shroud. I ended up cutting off the tabs on the one side so it sat flush on the top side of the shroud and you can secure it with self tappers if for extra security and trimmed the other sides tabs so it sat right inside the lip tightly. I made the wires face up for the ease of access as I didn't want to pay like $18 for the plug that fits in it correctly. not yet any way.
This is what I used to control it.http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalog/parts/partsProduct.jsp?itemIdentifier=326161_69568_0_&skuDescription=Compressor+Works+/+Cooling+Fan+Control&brandName=Compressor+Works&displayName=Cooling+Fan+Control&categoryNValue=15299999&sortType=&store=4821&isSearchByPartNumber=&fromWhere=&fromString=&counter=3&itemId=114-0&navValue=15200114&filterByKeyWord=radiator+fan&productId=326161&searchText=&categoryDisplayName=&parentId=52-0
It can be used for dual fans, but I cut and capped the second lead. Also the 10 gauge female connectors fit perfect over the blades from the fan leads.
For the a/c clutch I tapped into the black w/ yellow stripe @ the plug for the compressor.
For my 12v+ switched, I tapped the red line into the wiper motor. Also if you use a fuse tap, the only 12V+ switched fuse is #11. Which I wouldnt know if it would work as the fuse-tap is only supposed to have like 10 amps.
I attempted to use the starter solenoid for the ground and postive but that made the the relay click when it shut off and also made the truck start when the key was in on position. Then ended up grounding it near the controller and ran the 12v+ constant straight to the battery.
Here is a shot of where I mounted it. Still have to finish cleaning up though.
Also here are some of more photos I took of the job.
