5.0 Tailpipe Idea.

Well, it was a thought, check here first in this thread. Truck is still on the hoist at my friend and Brothers house. What a nightmare, things just keep breaking, must have been build with some crap steel. Left manifold had to come off, studs broke off. Then the dip stick tube. Can't get back to it untill Wednesday when we are both off work. Once we get the cat's installed back on we'll see if the lack of power is still there. I was told the cat's were plugged up causing the falling on it's face issue. No codes to indicate a problem like this. Next will be muffler as the culprit to investigate. 300,000 miles and it's still the original exhaust, so we have to look at everything.

I'd say most companies make 2 in 1 out mufflers. Go directly to the sites of your favorite muffler companies. The big names should all have something close for you. I wanted to try an Edelbrock SDT muffler for my SOHC, they only had a twin 2.25" in, to a single 3" outlet. I had one 2.5" tailpipe made to fit it with a resonator.

The muffler is your big factor, that's what determines most of the sound quality.

What do you mean by "without breaking the bank"? Most mufflers can be had and installed for under $200 if you're not doing full chromed tips, etc. The muffler is only part of the cost, the labor is typically more expensive.

You need to price a few mufflers, many are $150 alone, even Flowmaster.

$150 for the muffler? I guess if its polished, etc. In some cursory searching on Summit alone, most could be found for under $100 ($70 for single in/out, $90 - $100 for dual in out). Same with Magnaflow as well. Maybe the more specialty mufflers with Delta Flow, etc.

I can honestly say, I've done my own exhaust and had 2 or 3 installed, and I've never paid over $175, and that's urban California prices which should be higher than many other areas. With that said, all my exhausts are relatively simple... I don't go with real long pipes or tips or anything.

Of course, depending on what you are looking for, that will determine the price. Running dual pipes all the way to the back will typically be more expensive than running a single out the back. Dumping it before the rear axle will typically be cheaper than running it all the way out the back, etc. Beyond that, your muffler choice will also have an effect on the price.

The biggest price differentiators though is the shop. When I price out exhausts, I typically get quote ranges from several shops and have always gotten a wide range of prices. As an example, when I was putting a flowmaster 50 series with delta flow on my '01 Ford Ranger Edge (full 2.5" over axle dumped before bumper), I got quote ranges from 5 shops. The highest quote was $460, the cheapest was $155. I ended up going with a shop at $165 because their shop was cleaner and the guy running the shop didn't look like he had just stopped working as a carnie.

The 70 series mufflers went up recently to the $150 range. Very odd,

Well, I'm certainly not trying to say you can get ANY muffler and pipe combo for under $200. Obviously, with anything, there is a range of prices for the parts. As you point out, the flowmaster 70 series is more expensive. Most of the mufflers that are polished seem to come at a $20 - $40 premium, etc. Also, I know getting Delta Flow on most of the Flowmasters costs more, etc.

But, if his sole purpose is to avoid breaking the bank, there are options other than a 70 series which would be less costly and would still get him a nice sound and more flow. But, it does appear that, as with everything else these days, prices are on the rise. Now that fuel has come down in price, they have to make their money up somewhere =).

previous owners of my sport had the 70 series flowmasters on my 01 sport i didnt like them at all. I am much happier with the 40 series i love it much better then the 70 series.

I finally got the exhaust done on my 5.0. I went with 2.5" pipe from where the secondary cats used to be, into a Flo Pro muffler (FP736, 2.5" dual in, 2.5" single out, 24" long), and 2.5" back out to just behind the rear wheel. I'm fairly pleased with the noise level, it's not to loud and I only get "drone" sound right before a gear change. It also does feel like a gained a little power out of throttle, which is nice. Hopefully I will also gain some mpg. I would take a few pictures, but it's to bloody cold in N.C right now.

Total cost parts and labor, $400.

do u got pics of the setup duke

I was going to do a dual exhaust on the ex but after reading this I have decided to stick with a single exhaust. I am going to use the cherry bomb turbo muffler and leave the exit for the exhaust in the stock location.

Yea, it should pass. There isn't an O2 sensor behind the rear cats, so you won't throw MIL or CEL. The only way the inspection station would know is if they got under the truck (which they don't do here in N.C) and knew there was supposed to be 4 cats and not 2.

Because I had the rear cats removed, which a lot of others do with their 5.0s, I could not order any of the cat-back systems you see, such as the MAC cat back that Henson Performance sells (http://www.hensonperformance.com/Productsftex_Catback.html). So I just took it to a local welder and he ordered the muffler I wanted and welded the pipes together.
