Ok, once I realize I ask dumb questions... they come much easier...
So, the 5.0 sounds like a candidate for euthenasia; IM seeing prices anywhere from 3500 to 6600 for a stock rebuild. I cant see paying to have a used engine installed just to take a chance it will puke a month later. Id appreciate suggestions as to the pros and cons of each. I love the power of the engine, Im going to have it repaired, but I havent decided just how im going to approach it yet. Please let me know, IF you have an opinion either way. thanks.

I think your prices are just a tad on the high side. Google ford crate engine. I found a roller ready to go under 2 grand (rebuiltcrateengines.com)

thats installed

well now, thats a horse of a different color!
Even so, if you rebuild the existing (time permits??) it would (should) be less than that

ive started a couple of swaps and never finished one properly... this is my daily driver. so im going to have to enlist someone that will do it right.. sad but true.

Did you actually figure out if something is wrong with it yet? If you replace it I think you should replace it with the brand new Ford 5.0L. :D

my sister had her 3.1?? Taurus rebuilt once for $2000 installed... I cant imagine a 5.0 explorer would be much more... unless they're pulling the core support maybe.

I agree.. $6000 for an engine installed? Wow way too much! Are you getting a kiss with that? Or just straight screwed? We have a place over here in Grand Rapids Michigan that offers rebuilds with a 100,000 mile warranty! Thats right, 100,000 miles! $4800 installed! I knwo you are in Utah, but had no idea things were that much more expensive there. sorry

wow, that makes me WANT to have mine rebuilt, just for the warranty (me and engine repairs dont get along)

hit or miss is right my last junk yard 5.0L had no oil pressure AFTER I installed it... dang

thats the last time I install without priming the pump by hand first and check the oil pump rotation and function

now with that said, I have replaced MANY engines with used junk yard units with great results... this was the first one to bite me and guess what I wont be buying anymore used engines from that lot

Labor on these 5.0L gen II trucks is alot... I mean you even have to remove the center console to get the engine out most times ... so I can understand it being a bit more expensive then a FWD car.. but for $6K you can go buy two used 5.0L Explorer's
