Anyone have a link to a guide or step by step? Searching has yielded 0 results. I've done the job on foxes, just not sure how the crank/cam sensor and reluctor wheel factors in.

Similar to foxbody
Just need a puller for the crank balancer
The crank sensor unbolts w two screws the cam synchronizer doesn’t need to be touched it will stay on the same cam gear tooth during the replacement
If you do have to remove the cam synchronizer it installs exactly like a distributor, cyl 1 at tdc on compression stroke, drop synchro in using alignment tool and blamo you are done.

You will have to cut the oil pan gasket in two spots
You have to pry the timing cover out
Over the alignment dowls because you are not dropping the oil pan

Also there are the notorious 4 bolts that go through the water pump through the timing cover and into the water jacket. Basically plan on those four or at least one snapping
Sometimes the timing cover gets *****ed up from the removal so it’s not a bad idea to get a new one on hand, they are around $100 for a new one, made in Mexico cast aluminum, eBay.

I use felpro gasket and lots of rtv in the corners where the oil pan gasket was cut

I use aluminum foil in the exposed oil pan to catch all the crap from cleaning the old gasket
I Usually leave the drain plug out if the crank case while I the timing cover job that way any water that falls in drains directly out. Fresh oil and filter everytime
I plan a 6-10 hour for 5.0
Timing cover in the truck, depends on how many of the bolts snap.. get the torch and welder out… extract broken studs
5/16 bolts can be had at local hardware store but be prepared to have to cut and thread a little as the factory
Bolts are weird lengths
Or go prepared and get a new set of
Bolts before you start I think they sell a bolt
Kit for the explorer 5.
Factory Explorer timing Chain is pretty good, Cloyes also makes a decent set at most parts stores

Thanks for the response. I broke 3 bolts. Got one out. One snapped again, hoping enough sticking out once cover is removed. The other is the very top short bolt going into cover. This bolt breaks on most of my foxes also. I used plenty of heat and spray. Will probably need a cover but the dorman ones have terrible reviews. Any links to a good one? Or brand thats good? Still needing a solution for dipstick tube also.

If you have room and a welder, consider welding a nut to the broken stud.
