Anyone with a 5.0L running a bigger than stock MAF? I know that it will require tuning, but that's happening soon anyway.

Heads are ported and the intake is ported to accept a 75mm throttle body (kind of annoying since I have to source larger aftermarket gaskets but have smaller TB). I already know how to adapt a "Mustang" throttlebody to fit the Explorer intake and those are available in 70-75 mm sizes. What I don't know is the MAF. I'm looking for something in the 75-85 mm range that will attach to the stock air box and intake tube. May rig up a better flowing fresh air intake later, but that is a project for later.

Larger MAFs may have been sold for these in the past, but nothing seems to be these days. I know that with custom tuning there is a lot more leeway in what can be used. So I'm just curious what/if people have used as an upgrade with associated tuning changes.

May be a pointless question at this time, the Explorer MAF and Throttlebody were at one point considered an upgrades for the 5.0L Mustangs, so they are probably good enough for my purposes for now. If I think I'm going to want it in the near future, I'd rather have it in place before I start getting tuned. Even if it's not used now I'd like to have the information for future modifications.

if you want to go a little larger, a lighting maf is 90mm, and will fit your plug.
up until i stopped using the factory computer and the tuning i had i also used a maf from here
way cheaper and never had any problems.

Was considering both of those options.

I know that the older 80mm Lightning MAF will fit the air box and intake tube, but is the wrong connector for the year Explorer and missing the IAT sensor. 90mm Lightning MAF does not have those problems, but I wasn't sure about it attaching to the air box or fitting in the air tube. If it'll fit both of those that would be perfect. Maybe I should see about ordering one from Amazon to check fitment since its an easy return. Don't really want to ask the local autopart store to order one in just for fit checking, and I'm not going to find a Lightning in a local salvage yard.

Was definitely eyeing the PMAS stuff. I get confused when I start seeing the stuff about being calibrated for different applications and injector size, since none of that applies anyway. PMAS is the only one that sells parts for you to assemble your own solution. I'm thinking that the 85mm flanged (H-B85F), or the 80mm Flanged (H-B80F)housings would be good fit for the application. Just have to figure out their sensor stuff.

I think that the Lightning MAF is the preferred option for me if it'll fit.

I recon I'll also send PMAS a message after the holidays, tell them what I'm doing and see what parts they recommend.

i got my lighting maf used off corral.net years ago. the only reason why i changed it was we almost pegged it when i changed the motor and supercharger set up. they are good for around 400-450 flywheel hp. anything beyond that, you will want to go aftermarket.

You can always wire in the older style plug and plumb in an iat allowing you to use that 80mm mas

@JoshT What kind of AFR gauge are you using?

Measured the factory maf. Where it enters the intake tube it's 85mm, and the tube is an easy fit, so looks like the 90mm Lightning MAF might be a go on that end. The 85mm PMAS would definitely work.

The thought did cross my mind, but I'd rather not. I did accidentally buy an intake tube for a 98 with the IAT sensor in the tube, and that IAT sensor is same as the 4.0 that I removed from the truck. If it comes down to it that is an option. I'll wire up an adapter harness to go from the newer plug style to the older style plugs.

Whats that? :confused2:

LOL. Nothing at the moment. I've got a 14point7 to install. Not setting it up with a gauge, just installing to datalog with the SCT for tuning. Installed the new Magnaflow cat pipes last week, and finished flipping the axle today (Ranger). Will be dropping the truck at exhaust shop next week (hopefully) and they'll be adding another bung for the wideband.

I really hope that'll be done next week, truck is squatted right now and I hate it. Axle flip is only temporary for now, but hoping to be permanent if I can ever source the front suspension components I need, so I wanted it in that configuration for pipe routing.

Ok. well you got that then...
