On a trip camping I was towing our boat up to the lake and I had noticed that the Temp. Gauge had shot up to H and so I pulled over and opened the hood and on the passenger side of the engine, antifreeze was leaking and a hose had broken in two, however the hose was connected by a black plastic piece that broke apart. Im not sure what it is but i reconnected the hose bypassing it and added antifreeze and it hasnt overheated since, im just wondering what the part is and how i can fix it or if its really needed. The piece was connected to the left hose.

Now to the leaf spring, i discovered this washer looking thing sitting out of the spring and I was wondering if that needs to be there or if someone hammered it in there for some reason and it just worked itself out.

The first part is called the coolant bypass valve, sometimes called the heater bypass valve.

It is not "necessary" however your air conditioner will do much better with it being replaced. it blocks hot coolant from entering the heater core, making the hvac box cooler--

The washer in the leaf spring is called a leaf isolation pad.

You can get them at www.generalspringkc.com although you may need to call them on the phone to get the correct one. There is supposed to be a knob sticking out of it to keep it located to the hole in the leaf spring. if you look at your picture you can see one sitting in it's normal location--with the knob sticking through the leaf. Looks like the far rear one broke off and slid down the pack.

The part is only a couple of bucks, but replacing in may be a challenge. you might try drooping the rear axle down as far as it will go and separate the leafs with a prybar enough to slide the new pad in place. Otherwise the leaf pack needs to be taken apart and re assembled with new pads in place.

Thanks for the information. Do I have to get the bypass valve from Ford? And by drooping the axle do you mean weighing down the rear end as much as I can?

let it hang , that is what droop is,,

like this,,

Oh alright thanks that makes better sense, releasing tension on the springs rather than adding it. Thanks
