Whats the difference in a 5 speed with the starter on the passenger side verse the drivers? ? What whould need to be changed to use one verses the other?? Can the bell house just be swapped? Is it removable? ? I cant find any 4.0 5speeds but found a 2.9 which I know will work but think it has the starter on the passenger side.im pretty sure my 94 4.0 has it on the drivers. .

Sure.where you located at tho and any of them good? I dont wanna spend a bunch of money because its getting pulled in a couple months for my motor trans swap.just need something to get by till then.I cant afford to drive my explorer as a DD.gas is $4.02 here and im getting under 10 mpg now plus I keep getting pulled and tickets

I found the 2.9 for cheap.just need to know what needs to be swapped to use a passenger side starter trans?? Or can I just swap my bellhouse onto the 2.9?? Is the bellhouse removable? ? Obviously I haven't had or seen a m5 off vehicle

From what im reading its probably a 2.3. Maybe the guy doesn't know what he is talking about or maybe the picture is real bad and the start is kn the drivers not passenger. .

Both the 2.9 and 4.0 use the same bellhousing and starter location.

On the drivers side right?? This has to be from a 2.3 unless the pics just suck.ive emailed him back and asked.

Idk about the 2.9 or 4.0 but my 2.3 has the starter on the passenger side.
If you wanna swap sides, you'll need to use longer wires to cross over. Probably need the starter for that transmission as well, but I don't see any other reasons it wouldn't work.

Pretty sure it uses a different bellhouse, clutch, flywheel, flexplate.....as far as I know it wont bolt up and the 4.0 m5 doesnt have a removable bellhouse

I mean the 2.9 shouldn't be a problem to swap. I know the 2.3 will be different, but I was simply stating that it has the starter on the passenger side. In case you were wondering

Gotcha yea this dude swears its a 2.9 but the starter looks to be on the passenger. .ill see when he responds

Just posted this in another thread, but here's a quick pic of an M5OD:

This is the M5OD out of my 93 sport that is currently sitting in my 91 XLT, but cleaned up, new slave and fresh fluids...as you can see, almost everything from the bell housing to the extension housing is all one piece, and the starter is on the driver side (and I'm sure of this as I just had to take it out to replace the slave only two weeks ago.)

Ok good luck. On the upside the 2.3 does have a lower first gear :D

Sweet thanks

Really? Good to know thanks :D

Yep people swap them all the time for off roading.topd its much for a DD in city tho, especially if you got low rear gears..

The 2.8, 2.9, (3.0... not 100% sure on this one, im getting old. But it doesnt matter, the bolt pattern is different.) and 4.0 all have the starter on the driver side. The 2.3/2.5 has the starter on the pass side.

Unless the pic is upside down , it won't work.
