I searched and did not see a good financial estimate for these two options. I believe I only saw one person say that it was $1,700 for a rebuild.

Rebuild: $$$$?
Replace with a properly working 5R55E: $$$$?
Or get them to only go in and fix the exact problem: $$$$?

Thanks,
Geoff

Has yours failed, is it slipping, or burned up? If there is a possibility of any debris in the fluid, then it will be in the radiator cooler, and lines. If so, then a filter should be installed after those, and before the trans. The top line is usually the return(In) line on Ford automatics. Good luck,

it's a difficult call. If I decided to replace I'd opt for a FORD reman. Cost to repair depend on how much YOU want to do... I am distrustful of shops... they will rebuild at the drop of a hat... and thse trannies do not do well on cosmetic rebuilds.

What would I be looking at for a Ford reman? I just want to see some different numbers that people have seen/had. I have tomorrow (Tuesday) off so maybe I will call around or drive around to get some estimates. I just want to make sure I don't get ripped off b/c I have NO idea what these options should cost me.

You never said what your problem was. The 5R55E has a number of valve body problems associated with leaking gaskets. Unless you drove it around (like my parents would) till it won't move anymore, just the valve body work would need to be done. Reports I've seen indicate even a dealer will do this for about $800. You could try it yourself for about $50 and three hours time. Not much to loose if you are going for a rebuild anyway.

Sorry about that OperaHouse.
