2013 Ford Explorer XLT
Hello all -

I've searched the various forums and have found loads of threads on rough idle, but none on the 5th Generation Explorers. I know many of you have seen this before so I'm hoping I can get some leads.

At idle, my 2013 Explorer XLT idles around 600 RPM, which is about 100 RPM low, and at idle, it tries to stall, dipping to 500 RPM. So far, it hasn't stalled, but that's probably only a matter of time. When accelerating or normal driving, it runs perfect. It started doing this about 2-3 months ago.

I've cleaned the throttle body and it still does the same thing. Since it's a "drive by wire" model, could there be a problem with my accelerator positioning switch or fuel injectors? I'm just not sure what to focus on next before taking it to a shop and paying hundreds of $$$.

By the way, it's not throwing any codes and no check engine light.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Not an Explorer, but I know on Ford Edges, rough idle and rpm dipping briefly is a common symptom of bad purge valve.
My 18 Edge had that issue. I replaced the purge valve and the issue went away. I didn't have any codes either.

Just something to check.

Thanks O. I'll give that a shot and let you know.

Okay. Here's my update and some additional information. As mentioned before, I thoroughly cleaned my throttle body. Since then, I've replaced the purge valve and cleaned the mass airflow sensor (MAF). No change. Now, I did notice, as mentioned in some of the other threads, that when I turn off the AIR CONDITIONING, it idles just fine and the RPM doesn't drop at idle. But I haven't seen any fixes for the AC issue, either. So now, I'm driving around with my AC turned off until I can figure out what the problem is. Still no codes or check engine light.

One other thing - I know that normal idle is usually around 700-750 RPM. My Expl idles around 600 with the occasional dip to around 500 RPM. Is this a programming issue?

Again, any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Beauboy
