Hi guys,

I am one of those guys who likes my EX, like I like my EX.
( quiet and no longer nagging )

I have disabled the seat belt reminder using the procedure in the manual. And the key in chime by pulling the fuse. However, every time I put the key in the ingition I get 6 chimes. It only happens when I first put the key in and does not re-pete.

Does anybody know what this chime is reminding me of ? and how to shut it off ?

Many Thanks,

Many Thanks,

Are they fast chimes or slow? Is your door open? If they are fast it's your car telling you something is broken. Pull the codes. If they are slow it is a reminder for something.

Door is closed, Chimes are slow. Any idea what it is reminding me of ?

Low oil or coolant, or a low/dying battery? Just give everything a good once-over.

I don't think disarming the beltminder eliminates all chimes, just the repetitive reminder that comes on- what- 30 seconds after the vehicle has been started and you have not belted up. Thinking out loud...

Many Thanks,

Do you mean the set of chime's you hear right after you turn the ignition on and start up the engine? If it is those chimes you are talking about, it's been discussed before in here and no easy, definitive answers on how to eliminate them other than disconnect and solder together the 2 wires that go into the chime device itself that is located behind the dashboard. This will eliminate the sound that comes from the chime device according to what one poster wrote in here. One thing these Explorer's aren't short on is warning chimes, flashing dash icons and messages on the message screen. You'd think we were launching a Nuclear Missile each time we start the engine.

Correct, it doesn't disarm any other chimes other than just the seat belt minder.

Put key into ingition and turn on, All warning lights come on and the chime starts to ding.

On the 3rd ding half of the lights go off and the chime continues to ding. On the 6th and last ding the only light to go off is the airbag light, the remaining lights stay on
( check gage, check engin, battery, and seat belt )

When the vehicle is started, and after the 6th ding, all lights go off except for the seat belt light, witch stays on for about a minuite.

Is this normal ? Or is something wrong with the air bag system ?

I would have thought seat belt. Does the chimming stop once you put in the seat belt before the 6 chimes are done?

Well, as a matter of fact, It does :) :(

good call on that one ! now can you tell me how to eliminate it also ?

Many Thanks,

The red seat belt light is nornal. I turned off the chime in my Ex for the seat belt minder as well, and the seat belt icon (upper left dash) stays on for a minute or two before it goes away. It is the last light to disappear after a start up. It usually goes off by the time I am pulling out of the driveway. The check gauge, check engine and battery lights shouldn't stay on all that long after a start up. BTW, how long does this chime stay on for or does it go away after a start up? If no alarm chimes or dash icons going off as you drive, then you should be okay.

Well I actually do not. I would check the manual. You could just wear your seat belt :p

It stays on for 6 chimes, even if you start the vehicle. only goes away if you buckle the seat belt. I would of thought you could simply pull a fuse and be done with it.

If you followed the procedure in the manual to shut off the seat belt minder chime correctly, the seat belt warning chime and flashing dash icon should no longer activate/sound alarm if you are driving without wearing the seat belt. I know mine is working as it should, because I don't wear my seat belt when I drive to the gym every day at 5 am(short drive and hardly anyone on the roads then) and the seat belt alarm does not activate. You will still get a series(possibly 6, haven't counted them) of start up chimes when you start the engine each time. Don't know why they have start up chimes on these things unless it has to do with some kind of self diagnostic test the system does each time it is started or it is just to let you know the engine is now running. I guess the sound of the engine isn't enough of a dead giveaway. The upper left corner seat belt dash icon will stay lit up for 1 minute after the engine is started, then disappear. I timed it today out of curiosity. As far as I know, the chime device sounds the warning chimes for a bunch of other vehicle warning systems, so not so simple as pulling a fuse to quiet it down.
