i've found a great healthy v8 for my truck, i only got a few Q's. now the 5.0's from an 86'F-150 and it's in pretty good condition. would it work being an 86' and would i also be able 2 use the tranny from it? my friend's dad is the one i'm buying it from, and he said i could pull out whatever else was needed 2 accomplish the swap what else could i use from the F-150, though i'm not going 2 do it a local motor shop is going 2 do the swap i'd still like 2 know what is going 2 be usable. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

to be emmisions legal you need to have a motor that is at least as new as your vehicle. i beleive the 86 truck had a computer controlled carburator so you will have to change it to fuel injection.

it is fuel injection

You probably would have better luck with a newer mustang engine. The problem with the truck engines is they are tall. Taller then a mustang and so they don't usually fit in the engine bay. At least that is what I have read. Also you should do a check on your state laws regarding this sort of a swap due to the differn't years of vehicles.

well if its FI then you could probably get away with it being older than your exp. as far as emmissions go(depending on where you live and how strict inspections are) but like rpenner says the truck engine is taller. i think that its just the uppermanifold that makes it taller. you could get an aftermarket intake for a mustang and then get a chip made for the computer to compensate for the different intake. anyway i think that the biggest issue, at least that i believe, is how do you get even the block, heads, and exauhst to fit? im in the planning stages of this swap too so if you find out any info on measurement methods and fit then let me know. good luck

out of curiosity

What are u planning on dropping in your truck fordkrazy? 302??

im going to use a 302. thats about the only thing i am sure of right now. :banghead:

still don't know where your gonna get the motor from?

well needless to say the 351 wont fit and its like a grand more than the 302 i was looking at. sounds to me like i need to find someone else.

What's your budget for the swap?

well i looked a dss racing and they seem pretty pricy and more geard to racing. sehr makes racing engines but also daily driver hot rod engines. well they sent me an apology email and so im not sure what to do. here is the email

Fordkrazy,

Sorry I get caught up in the saying bigger is better.
OK SR302-02 with GT40 heads compatable multiport $3499.00
Balance engine
$125.00
Balance kit (harmonic balancer and flexplate)
$195.00
Comp cam upgrade
$100.00
Crate fee
$65.00
Total
$3984.00
If you like to stroke the 302 to a 347CI Add $400.00
If you like to get one ordered we need about 4-5 weeks to build it
They are built to run on pump gas and be driven every day.
Thanks
Jack

what do you guys think?
my budget will be around 6grand. thats about what chris johnson spent on rebuilding his 4.0

302

That 302 sounds like it can haul a$$ and it sounds like a good idea.

i just hope they are customer friendly. and willing to stand by their work.

Hey Fordkrazy,

Have you considered a bodylift to get 2 or 3 inches of vertical clearance under the hood? The motor is attatched to the frame, so lifting the body will give you the extra inches under the hood...or you could do like Mel and Stace and get a cowl induction hood...or both.

'86 5.0L

The '86 would work if you used a Mass Air conversion kit.
The Ford unit is complete and they do know all of the parts.
The Truck EFI manifold is designed for low end torque, more so than the Mustang but mayn not flow as well.

If you are looking into engine packages, what about the Ford crate motors ?
Guys around here (MA) have been using the "Jasper" engines. I do not know the pricing but they are not cheap.
I would think any complete engine will be pricey.

I'd build the '86 up with a low end cam from Comp Cams and use the mass air kit from Ford. Maybe roller rockers, and if money provides a low end manifold, i.e. Edelbrock, Trickflow. Also concider larger Mass Air sensor than stock (73mm) and a throttle body (70mm). Don't go to big but atleast larger than stock (Truck maller than Mustang type). Don't forget a good pair of headers. (L&L)

Good Luck,
