91 Explorer 4x4

exlposablazin, have you ever engaged the 4x4? You should do so at least once a month. If the mechanisms are not engaged every so often, the inner workings of the shift motor/ module and all that tend to "freeze up". When I got my 93X, the 4x4 was not working. It was previously my sister's truck, and she had not engaged in several years. The cost ended up being over 1k at a ford dealership, a cost that could have been avioded by simply engaging the 4wheel drive system occasionally

I've had the car for about 9 months, before that the 4x4 was rarely ever used by my dad...i used it about a few months back and it worked...it's hard to tell the difference between it being in 4x4 versus 2x4...it feels like it pulls a lot better though.

sweet, thats goo that it works. Yah keep engaging it every once in a while, even take it out for a little offroading once in a while. Its sometimes hard to tell when its in 4x4 except on the trails you can really notice. For starters, see if you can get through somethin in 2wd, if you can't shift into 4x4 and try it again. I have a manual trans, so I dont really experiment too much in 2wd cuz I end up burnin the hell outta my clutch

isn't it really bad on your car if you drive in 4x4 on the pavement...I've read that it is horrible on the gears or the 4x4.

i also wanted to know the capabilities of my 4 wheel drive...only modification i have is a k and n drop in filter...there is a sweet offroad park here and just wanted to know if my stock tires will tear up the beating trail.

I used to wheel my '91 some when it was bone stock. In fact, that's what earned me the name "6-tire Doty". I didn't have the best tires....well....i had terrible stock tires and ended up blowing 2 of them in the same trail/day. I didn't have any trouble outside of that doing some relatively hard stuff, but the tires were my weak point.

I put up a page to show you what I did in my stock '91, and I'm sure there's a lot of other people on here that have done stuff in their bone stock explorer...

Here's the page I made a couple seconds ago (doesn't look the best, but it gets the point across :D ) and check out the movie at the bottom. There's some crazy things you can do in a stock Explorer, I just hope your tires were in better condition than mine were:

Hey, no offense takin :D You should see the dents and scrapes on it now ;) Yeah, those were some bald ass tires, so I'm sure you'd be fine. But hey, even with my beat-up X, I never once needed a strap until I lifted it. Stock X's are much more capable than people think, and I'd say as long as you air down your tires you should be fine. Or just go buy some 33x12.50 Mud-terrains and you'll never have to worry about your tires again :D

I remember that run. Jared, you decided to lift and get bigger tires cause of all the **** I gave you that weekend ;) Then in Moab I decided to grow up too! :bounce:

I'm just afraid to beat the crap out of it...it looks like the day we got it...literally....it still has perfect clear coat and i wax it all the time, im not talking like derbing it, but just taking it up some steap stuff...i couldnt believe that crazy azz scaling you did. jeez

I know, you are one of the voices in the video :D but we were in the same boat that weekend. I was lowest to the ground, you were 2 wheel drive...it was a battle of who could go longer without needing a strap :D We showed 'em up big time... But yeah, I basically had to get better tires after that considering all the **** I took :D

Explosa...if you're worried about getting it dirty, or scratching it, you're in the wrong business goin off-road. Part of the reason mine looks so beat up there is because it's just dirty...Aside from that, I have tons of paint scrape marks from trees and rocks and what not...and I'm doing good compared to some other people. I mean hell, I've still got some places where mud from 2 years ago kinda messed up my paint.

Essentially, you might be able to get off the trail without any body damage, without any scrapes, etc... You may be able to go wash it and have it still looking like new, but anytime you go off road, you're taking that chance that it's gonna get all messed up. It's up to whether or not you're willing to take that or not.

I don't want to discourage you from off-roading...hell, that's the LAST thing I want to do. But just letting you know, it can and sometimes does happen. If you saw that video and thought "ouch" you should see what my skidplates and rocker panels look like ;)

well, I wouldn't personally drive to the store in 4x4, but I don't think its that bad, just shifting it in for like 10 seconds going straight on the road. Just to make sure everything works. I wouldnt' bust out a bunch of turns and manuevers but I wouldn't sorry about it. If you want to check out the 4x4 park, dont be afraid! I wouldnt' recommend doing massive mud boggin or whatever unless you got a friend that can pull you out, but check it out man! have some fun and experiment, and get used to your truck. You'll get hooked before long. Oh and dont jump it:p

as mentoned before about not telling the difference from 4x4 and 4x2. well i must have something wrong then because in 4 high my front tires feel like there going to rip a hole in the ground or fall off in 4 high when im turning.

I used 4wd for the first time in awhile yesterday...but not for offroading. My neighbor had a 2.5 foot diameter 80 foot tall pine tree in his front yard that he wanted to take down, so he got a ladder, notched it at the base and halfway up with his chainsaw, then tied a huge rope about a quarter of the way up on the trunk. I was about 60 feet away with the other end of the rope tied to my towing hitch and dropped into 4 high :D. Then I just pulled forward a little ways and SNAP! the tree comes crashing down in two pieces. It was sweet because it hardly felt like I was pulling anything.

I have a 92 Explorer with 200K and original everything (cepting tires and the like). Little offraod but a lot of up I-80 7000 feet elev gain in 80 miles and back, often in snow. Virtually no serious offroading, but still runs great .

AHH, it all started with me when i was 12, my dad let me rip up a swamp with the 73 ch*vy monster truck we had. i was hauling ass and saw a tree i was headed straight for... i turned the wheel and nothing happend! i started to panic and put my hand on the shifter but my dad grabed and and told me to floor it. i did as commanded with little hessitation. about 3 feet from the tree the front 42 inch tires gripped the soft slimey mud and we were off.

thats when i learned to love off-roading. :D

as far as your X. alec is right do not run that high of octane in it, it leaves **** inside your engie.. that should sum it up for an X noobie like yourself :), man dont worry about the body it can be fixed, the times you will have when its you and your X with no escape from horors beyond immaginability besides the throttle you will get the sensation of "Romping" or "bogging" or whatever it is that turns yout on.
