91 Explorer 5 spd

Recently my 5 speed tranny developed a bearing whine that is audible in first, second, and third gear. I would like to know if it is possible to rebuild this unit myself at home? What special tools would this require, where could I obtain instructions on how to do this?

I wouldn’t try to rebuild the transmission myself unless I was very comfortable with tackling such a job. Although manual transmissions are infinitely easier to work on then automatics, they still require some specialized tools and knowledge. But if your like me and don’t mind diving into these kinds of projects, I highly recommend you get the Helms shop manual for your truck. Don’t think for a second that the manuals you buy at Track Auto are detailed enough. Spend the money (over $100) and you won’t regret it. Go to http://www.helminc.com and look up your year. The manuals (at least mine) come in two three-ring binders and includes about 2000 pages of detail about your specific year Explorer.

Tranny...?

I'm not sure but I experience 2 times the same thing with 2 different Ford tranny. On my 93 Escort and my later 94 Explorer, the two of em have pilote bearing and hydro clutch, on the first vehicule the beraing whent out causing the winning noise. On the Ex, it was the release bearing with the slave cylinder. So maybe you could check these 2 bearing first before any attemp of rebuilding. The pilote is about 8$ and the slave/relaese I dont remember, but if you do the work yourself, it's worth a try.
