First off, stats:
1993 Ford Explorer XLT
Automatic
V-6
Everything's stock

it has just shy of 250,000 miles on it
on third transmission

now the problem

went out to start it today
started up, and died
gave it a second, primed the fuel pump by turning the key forward one click, then started again, it started and ran, but by no means was it fit to go anywhere. the engine is now using/leaking a quart of oil about every week/week and a half or so.

possible solutions?

any help is greatly appreciated

The 4.0's tend to leak oil at the rear main and valve cover gaskets.

Sounds like you have more than a leaking issue. A compression test would probably be a good idea at this point.

Mine started to use oil like that at around 315,000 miles. It never ran rough tho. I changed the engine at 319,000.

Check the vacume lines on the engine. I bet one has blown off. Mine will do that every now and then and it is just a vacume line.

Yes, as BURNS said check the lines at the vacuum tree on the drivers side near the firewall.
