Hi All!
This is my GO TO site for advice so thanks in advance for all suggestions.
I acquired a '92 EX 4x4. I love this truck. Being able to get around the flats and hills without issue during the last snow storm in Portland, OR (Feb 2014) convinced me that I should try to keep this truck running.
Recently, the transmission started slipping (I think it's slipping) or showing signs of "Morning sickness" as described in other posts. First thing in the morning, I would back out of driveway - no problem. I would then shift in the OD/D to start my morning drive. After about 50 yards, the transmission seemed to dis-engage. A couple of moments later, the transmission would re-engage with a sudden jolt. The rest of the day driving is fine. The problem only seems to happen on the first forward shift in the morning.
Reading through other transmission related posts, I have come up with the following to check:
1. Transmission Fluid - My fluid level looks ok and the fluid doesn't look burnt on the dip stick. I took my EX to a local oil change place to have the fluid and filter replaced. They asked me when the last time I had it serviced. I didn't know when the last service was done as this EX was a hand-me-down. They would not do the fluid/filter replacement. Their reasoning was that if they dropped the pan and found sludge or ?? they didn't want the responsibility of not being able to put it back together and that more than likely the sludge was holding the tranny inerds together. I have changed trans fluid before but them saying what they did kind put a little scare in me.
2. Band Adjustment - I have read in other posts about getting the bands adjusted and that there is a very good "How To" on this procedure. I haven't found it yet so I was wondering if someone could post that link.
3. Transmission Service - I will, more than likely, take this step. I am assuming that a "service" includes : Fluid flush, filter replacement, band adjustment. I feel pretty confident in doing these tasks myself as long as I have a cook book in front of me. But if I can't do the above myself, can you suggest other tasks that I should ask for that should be included in a service? Also, what is a reasonable price for a transmission service?
Thanks Again!
