I just swapped a 95 explorer 4.0 to replace the blown motor in my 92. The yard I bought the motor from said that it was interchangeable.

I just read where the programming on a 91-94 would ultimately burn up the 95 motor.

Does anybody no anything about it?

Thanks for any info.

bump for ya, welcome to the site btw ^^

'95+ 4.0 OHV's had a little different configuration (heads and/or block I'm not sure) that gave the engine a little higher compression ratio. The '95+ computers are tuned to operate at the higher compression ratios, the '91-'94 computers aren't. I'm not sure of all the consequences, but I wouldn't be too surprised if there could potentially be some bad consequences. Hopefully someone else more in the know will chime in.

lets bump this back to the top....

Where did you read this? How would it "burn up" the motor?

I have a 2000 OHV in my 91. You have to switch all the sensors and wiring harness from your old motor over to the new one. The reason for this is I think 95 was the first year of OBD II vice your OBD I. I dont know if the 92's used the cam possition sensor, but my 91 didnt. I just pulled the sensor out and used the blank that was on my old one along with the gear that turns the oil pump off the cam. Also, the new motor didnt have the low oil sensensor in it. I did'nt realize that until after I sandblasted and painted the new one. :fire:

As far as the burning up motor part goes, I have about 8 or 9K on mine and no problems. I dont think the compression ratio was increased just a change in the combustion chambers on the head and the pistons have a deeper dish or vice versa. If you were to put 95+ heads on an older block, I think you would raise the compression by 1 point and would have to run 93 octane to keep the motor from pinging. The newer heads have what is called a fast burn chamber. Some where there is a write up that describes the different castings of all the major components.

I don't have all the answers, but feel free to e-mail me any time and I will help as much as possible. jocrook2@cox.net
