93 302 Swap Info

After some quick measurements with this where it sits. I have about 32 in to the condenser. So with any luck I'll get a radiator in there. 302 is about 30in so I have 2 inches for a radiator 🤣 we will see when we get there.

What application is your water pump for?

Does an '85 Mustang have a forward rotation water pump and is that one forward? I asked because you have your belt routed forward around the pulley.

I see what your saying. I can just run the belt on the opposite side to flip the rotation correct? I'm not even close to putting the motor in yet. Still have to drop the trans and bang on the tunnel. Then I can start to mock up motor mounts.

I was finding conflicting information as to whether the '85 Mustang has a forward rotating pump or not. The way that you are setting it up is good because you won't need extra tensioner hardware etc. I will look at some different '80s 5.0 water pumps. In the meantime, you
can pull the pump off and look which way that the impeller is designed to turn.

Ok. In 1985 a Crown Victoria with a 5.0 had a standard rotation water pump. In this Rockauto listing, there is a Gates pump listed for heavy duty applications like taxicabs and towing. If your pump happens to be reverse, you can use the '85 CV pump.

Please don't make me🤣 I really don't want to scrap all that silicone away I used to gasket it.

A small camera thru thru the hose port to see the impeller works without having to remove the pump from the engine.

I'm not sure how old that you are but you will find around here, the veteran fix and repair guys, In their/our quest for perfection,
scrap a lot of things. Sometimes more than just some RTV sealer. (Chuckles)

I'm basically half dead at my age. I'm by no means a perfectionist. We are calling this the junkyard build. It just has to work. Not incredibly well hah. Thanks for the insight. It is appreciated.

You put the transmission in from the top? With a picker?

Wild

Forget the factory trans crossmember you are going to have to modify it and the trans mount once the engine is set

If you are not running a body lift you are going to want to fold over the lip and the firewall to floor pan connections that lip gets in the way of your 1/2 ton 5 speed and exhaust

The shifter hole varies a great deal even similar model 5 speed trans the hole can move forward or back depending on year, tailhousing, engine and placement so nobody really could have prepped you for that :)

Most people who go this route use the serpentine belt setup and front dress/‘accessories because you will have more room for radiator. The way you have it now your radiator
May need to be tucked into the core support (chop cut weld) especially if you plan a mechanical fan. E fans can be hard to get to properly cool a v8 gen I

We are wild over here. Still figuring it out. Can you explain your last paragraph? You're making it sound like my current motor setup is incorrect. I did a rough measure and it looks like I'll have a few inches from the front of the motor. I based this off of where my motor mounts would rough in. I'm gonna get the body and cross member squared away this week. I bought a trans jack and I'll get it perfect and get the 4406 transfer case in there. Then we will get axles ordered and rough in the motor. Thank you!

@410Fortune I think I understand what you meant. We pulled the trans last night ( from the top and a trans Jack below) and we can visibly see it has to go back about 5 inches and we will have to do some bending and hammering. Next we are going to mock up the motor. THEN we can do the trans after we know we can fit a radiator and fan. Thanks for the help! Will post pics when I am done

Yes! Mock up engine first and put it as far back as you can go before intake hits firewall I have about 1/4” on my bronco ii between the back of the 5.0 intake and my firewall.
I have a slight body drop and I run a 1” intake spacer

I made relief cuts in my firewall to floor pan lip with grinder and hammered it flat
I also re shaped my floor pans slightly :) bfh

Then fiberglass to fix the holes bondo and spray paint
I did not want a body lift on a bii and the 4r70w is large behind the 302

Worth it
That was 20 years ago now
She fires right up

Hey. Is there anyway to tell which side goes where on a set of motor mounts?

Also got stuck tonight because my bolts were too long. Will get shorter bolts and revisit. Looks like I'm going to have to "swing" it in.

We were attempting to mock up the mounts and got stuck with those bolts on the back end hah.

What engine mounts are those?

Which
Bolts are too long? Can you cut them down?

The bolt pattern/ where the pins are and where the 302 is gonna line up is completely different. I'm about 90% sure I'm gonna be drilling my own holes.

I linked them above but here
They are advanced adapter branded

I am gonna buy shorter bolts next week. They have huge shoulders. You can see them pictured hanging over the cowl. Rookie mistake
