The manual transmission Explorer definitely has an access plate. I can't say for sure for the automatics. Hopefully someone else will know.

Welcome to the site it's great to have you here

Every 1st gen I've ever seen or heard of, auto and manual, ALL had an access plate on the hump.

i have never seen it for myself, but i have read that all 1st gens have an access panel for the transmission. and i have also read that all you have to do is pull back the carpet from underneath the dash to get to it. i dont recall seeing that the seats have to come out

In my experience you pretty much have to remove at least the center console, because the carpet is so stiff and formed. It's tough to pull it back easily. When I did it, I removed both seats and the console.

There will be an access panel. As Rhett said you will probably want to remove the console, but it isn't totally required - just hard to hold the carpet back.

You can verify this yourself very easily. If you look from underneath your car you can look directly over the trans for hole in the floor that looks covered from the other side. You don't have to pull your carpet and seats before hand. Are you trying to change your modulator?
