I have been fighting installing my new transmission into the explorer. I had the torque converter go in 2 steps and seems all the way. I have tried different angles on the transmission, tried spinning the shaft manually to make sure all is good, tried moving the torque converter around and the spinning the crankshaft but for some reason it doesn't want to slide forward.
It's like the stub on the torque converter won't go into its home.
So please anyone help me out

Welcome to this forum! The best way to do this is to place the transmission on the floor with the extension housing facing the floor, then place the torque converter into the bell housing. Keep turning the torque converter, and you will feel it drop another notch as you turn it. Place a block of wood in front of it so that it doesn't fall out, then use bolts to connect it to the bell housing. Place the transmission onto a suitable transmission jack, then remove the bolts & wood as soon as you are ready to bolt the transmission to the engine.

So the converter has 3 steps or 2? I have gotten it to 2 and do not believe that it has slipped out. I will drop it down and recheck everything.
I can tell you it's not close enough to start the bolts when it's shoved up there. I have even tried a couple longer bolts as dowels.

Don't use longer bolts, maybe test fit the converter by itself into the back of the crank and flywheel to ensure it will go.

Make sure the input shaft is correctly installed into the transmission, shorter splines in the transmission and the longer ones into the converter, I look at the bushing wear marks on the shaft, the side with two go into the trans and the side with one towards the converter.

Good point James. Often overlooked by many. Still double check all those and the CD4E shaft to make sure it is there. Installers have missed both! lol!

Got it in finally. Just had a slight angle that wouldn't let me get it in. Not sure how I missed it after all the hours fighting it.
Good info on the shaft splines etc. I did pull it out and check it out.
