How difficult is it to replace the clutch on a '95 2 door with a manual transmission? Does it require any special tools (ie transmission jack or others?). How long do you think it would take?

Alternatively how much does it cost to have someone do the work for me?

Thanks!

I may be utterly wrong here, but I was told that the engine needed to come out for a clutch on these cars. I really hope that someone jumps on here and tells me that's baloney, 'cos ours is coming due for one of those too.

How many miles on yours? We're coming up on 90K, and the clutch is getting progressivly worse. Not slipping much that I can tell, but the shift is getting very stiff.

You dont have to pull the engine. You have to pull the tranny and t case.

No "special" tools are required, however having air tools and a tranny jack can really help.

It took a friend and I 6 hours the first time, with hand tools.

I took me 8-10 hours of labor to do it myself the second time with hand tools.

It took 4 hours to do it the third time with air tools.

This is on a 88 BII that has been converted to a 4.0L drivetrain from a 93 Explorer. This is the same thing as any pre 98 Explorer.

replace the slave cylinder while you are in there, if you dont you WILL be sorry.

Look to pay 700-1000$ to have it done + 100 for a slave cylinder.

Look to spend 200-350$ if you do it yourself including heavy duty clutch, pilot bearing, slave cylinder, and flywheel re-surface.

Ah that's right, now I remember. Its the slave cylinder that's going on ours. Do they leak with age? Every so often I top up the clutch fluid reservoir with just a tiny bit of hydraulic fluid, and it makes things better for a while.

The guy said that if we're doing to slave cylinder, we might as well do the clutch too. $1000+ though!! Ouch.

THats right, even if you just drop the tranny to look in there because you thought you dropped a penny in the shifter hole, you mine as well replace the clutch and slave. The parts for these baby's are CHEAP compared to the cost of labor to drop and stuff the tranny.

Clutch pack = $200-250 for a Centerforce dual friction
Slave Cyl = $80-100

6 hours labor at $75/hr = 450 just in labor! OUCH!

It pays to learn how to do it yourself.........
