4WD not engaging from stop or on the fly. 4wd hi and 4wd lo lights flash off and on and then stay off. Seems to engage if put in 4wd , then back up and then go forward. transfer case actuator or hub problem?

Welcome To The Forum! Search around the site and you'll solve your problem, our trucks don't have "auto hubs" to cause problems and transfer case motor does not activate 4auto in our trucks like traditional setups. Could be an electrical problem, possibly mechanical but like I said search around the site there are trouble shooting tips on here.

welcome

Are you trying to engauge while in neutral, and stepping on the brake pedal?

Not necessary for 4Hi. Only for for 4Lo. And even if you're not engaging 4Lo properly, the OP wouldn't be getting the flashing lights. They only occur if there is a problem.

For a '95, it could be the vacuum actuator on the passenger's side of the front axle. If that's sticking, it could be causing your problems. As said above, 95 and up Explorers don't have switchable hubs. In a '95, the actuation is done in two places, the transfer case and the vacuum actuator on the front axle. Either of which not operating properly could cause your problems.

The 4w auto does not engage on the fly --(it seems to engage OK from a stop with the light coming on and staying on but not if done on the fly). It gives a 6 flash sequence of the 4wd lights then they go off for a minute or so and then the sequence is repeated and nothing else seems to happen.
