I am attempting to sell my 95 Explorer and have made several attempts to eliminate this terrible noise from the driveline. It is most noticable when its cold and when I drive it again after giving it roughly 2 hours of rest. It almost feels like its coming from underneath the passenger compartment and it sounds like the noise switches sides from L to R.
The vehicle has 105k miles and the tranny was rebuilt @ 86k. I am not experiencing any fluid loss, nor having any problems with the tranny shifting through gears. When I put the vehicle in 4H or 4L the noise goes away. I checked the fluid level in the transfer case, ended up changing it because I lost a good bit when I took off the drain plug. I changed the oil in the rear differential, checked for noises underneath while in D. No obvious squeaking or clicking. When I had someone accelerate, I heard the bang and its definitely coming from the front. Can't pinpoint exactly where it's coming from.
Any ideas what this could possibly be and how I could further diagnose this?
