Currently shopping for a second gen Explorer (to replace my first gen) and I've come across a couple of V8's for sale. I expect them to use a little more fuel, but is their fuel economy that much more than the V6? Anything to watch out for in these and other second gens?

Do yourself a favor and look for a V8. Fuel economy is very similar and the V8 engine and transmission is much more reliable. My V8's typically get around 16-17 city and up to 22-23 highway (your results may vary depending on where you live, traffic and how you drive). The AWD gets slightly less MPG than the 2WD (maybe 1-1.5 less MPG).

I currently own 1 SOHC V6 (has a rebuilt engine and trans) and had another a few years ago. Really have nothing good to ay about them. The OHV V6 is more reliable, but shares the same weak transmission and is down on power compared to the SOHC.

Owning/maintaining 4 V8's, they really don't have any weak points, just the usual wear items, which are easily replaced. The chassis parts are pretty much identical to the V6's. If you don't need/want the AWD, get the 2WD (less weight, slightly better MPG, easier to work on, less complexity = less to go wrong).

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Maybe I'll have to try a little harder to get a hold of the guy selling the V8. Yes, 4x4 is a must for me in my area. Damn mountains.

The V8's were only available with AWD (engaged all the time). if looking at an AWD, make sure the front drive shaft is in place. The AWD is very sensitive to all 4 tires being the same diameter (Ford says w/in 1/32 of an inch). If you want a true selectable 4x4, it'll have to be a V6.

How many miles on the ones you are looking at? Can you verify the service records?
As much as I a fan of MY 4.0 SOHC (I take REALLY good care of it), I would probably say go with the V8 also. When you get into an engine with 80-100k+ miles, you have to look at track record. The Ford 302 is pretty much bullet proof if you take care of it. And it probably can take more abuse than the other two. The SOHC does have a history of timing chain problems that can eventually overcome the value of the vehicle. Not to mention the possibility of game-over catastrophic failure. I can't comment on the OHV - never had one or even seen one - but probably better to stick with the 8.

Seen a couple but not a lot available in my area without a lot of mileage. At a point where I need wheels for getting to work and transporting family. Have something lined up on a 96 V6 with 173K Kms and extra set of tires for $1500 CDN, but needs brakes, eventual ball joints, and windshield. New listed V8 just showed up with just under 200K km for $1900. Leaning more to the V6, mostly for "bird in hand". Unfortunately I only have a few days off and limited time to vehicle shop.
