My local Firestone store wants upwards of $1200 to do this job. (plus alignment!) I have 190k miles on this vehicle, and although I love it, I'm afraid of getting this done and then barfing a trans or tossing a rod or something. The wife and I are in our early 80's, and although I have an 08 minivan also, I love the sohc 6 and can't afford a large repair bill on the Ford. It's been really good to us!

As a DIY-er, I'm stunned every time I hear what some of these shops want to charge for work like this. Stay away from the franchised repair shops with their excessive labor rates. I would seek out an independent shop...or, better yet someone who does this kind of work on the side.
