97 AWD Transfer case front output seal (Split the case?)

First major leak in 20yrs... Do the cases need to be split to do the front output seal on the transfer case?
1997 AWD V8

Ummnn I think I found the answer and it's YES ...

BTW it wasn't the front output seal. It is the inside seal from the transmission to the transfer case.
Transoil was near empty leaking into the transfer case and overfilling.... 173k miles
