97 EB Blend Door Fix

I have a 97 EB 2WD w/V8 and with the dreaded blend door problem. I've read jjue's write up which is great. But his vehicle is slightly different from mine. He has manual controls and I have the autoclimate system. Is there any difference in the procedure between the two? I've read in the Explorer newsgroup that the A/C system must be purged because of some bolts for the plenum being under the evaporator. Jjue's writeup makes no mention of the A/C system. This would be the deal breaker for me. I would be willing to tackle this project if I don't have to touch the A/C. Otherwise, I need to find a shop willing to do it.

did you ever find anything out on this? I need to fix my dads 98 and he has climate control also.
